Kingston, RI - The Wagner swimming & diving program concluded its fall season at the Harold Anderson Invite this weekend, with the men finishing in second place and the women placing third.
In its third season of competition, the men's team impressed at the weekend meet. The Seahawks only trailed Providence in total points. Meanwhile, the women clinched a podium finish at the event, finishing behind Vermont and the hosts Rhode Island.
After day one on Friday the men held the top spot, largely due to a pair of individual victories.
Sophomore Ruben Van Gool continued his dominant stretch in the 500-yard freestyle with a first place finish. Van Gool (4:33.35) narrowly edged Holy Cross's John Greiner (4:33.38) to take home the top spot.
Freshman Jasu Ovaskainen broke a school record in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:49.71. Fellow freshman Nikkolai Carrillo slotted in at second place with a time of 1:52.39.
In addition to the individual victories, the team of sophomores Kaan Nalçaci, Joel Knaapi, Alex Magditch and Ovaskainen won the 400-yard medley relay. The sophomores impressed as well on Saturday, with Vilarrasa and Nalçaci clinching wins in their respective 100-yard backstroke competitions.
To round out the competition, Van Gool once again showcased his endurance with a first place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle event. The Madrid, Spain native clocked in at 16:06.08.
The Seahawks swept the 200-yard backstroke competitions as Vilarrasa and Nalçaci earned first for each of their second individual victories of the weekend.
Luoto continued to shine in her debut season with the Green & White, earning first place in the 200-yard breaststroke. The Raisio, Finland native was also instrumental in Wagner's victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay — the penultimate event at the Harold Anderson Invite.
