Bridgewater, NJ - Freshmen Rebekka Luoto and Jasu Ovaskainen of the Wagner swimming & diving team earned Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Week honors for their respective performances at LIU, the conference announced Wednesday.
This is the second consecutive week that Luoto and Ovaskainen have earned NEC Rookie of the Week. For Luoto, this is her third recognition of the season, while Ovaskainen follows up his NEC Swimmer of the Week selection last week with a second straight rookie of the week nod.
Luoto was named Co-Rookie of the Week alongside Howard's Chanice Posada after posting two individual victories at LIU, bringing the Raisio, Finland native's total to seven on the year.
She took home the top spot in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.82 and the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:10.14.
Her Finnish teammate Ovaskainen also added two more individual victories to his season tally, helping the men's program secure its first ever conference win against the Sharks.
The Lahti, Finland native scored victories in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.80 and the 100-yard butterfly, securing a time of 50.21, which broke the Wagner school record.
Luoto and Ovaskainen were also named NEC Prime Performers alongside their teammates fifth year Olivia Bishop, sophomore Ruben Van Gool and freshman Nikkolai Carrillo.
Bishop led the Seahawks with three victories at LIU. She placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.83), 100-yard freestyle (53.28) and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.29) events.
Van Gool added two more individual victories in the distance competitions, marking the second straight week he has placed first in the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle at Wagner's respective events.
Rounding out the Prime Performers was Carrillo, who broke his own school record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:53.96.
