Poughkeepsie, NY - The Wagner men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Vassar Invitational on Sunday ahead of its fall season finale next weekend.
The women finished with a 3-3 overall record, while the men compiled a 2-5 tally.
It started off slow for the Wagner fencing's veteran program, as the women dropped their first two matchups to Yale and Tufts. But two bounce back performances versus Sacred Heart and Stevens brought the Seahawks to .500 on the day.
In the 20-7 victory over the Pioneers, respective 3-0 outings from sophomore Fanny Straub, junior Alex Cole and freshman Renata Ziganova pushed foil and sabre into the win column.
A tight 17-10 win over Stevens followed, a crucial 5-4 victory in the foil competition was the deciding factor as Ziganova once again pulled through with a 3-0 performance.Â
In a 19-8 loss to Cornell, the épée squad prevailed, 5-4, with junior Katerina Cervenkova closing out the showdown with a matchup clinching victory. Freshman Natalja Stiller went 2-1 to help the épée team.
The women then breezed past Yeshiva to close out the meet. Cervenkova paced the Green & White with 15 wins. Stiller passed the decade mark as well with a 10-3 record, while fellow freshman Alanna Clayton secured victory eight times in nine tries.
For the men, it was once again freshman Flavio Vinci leading the way with 16 overall victories.
Vinci kept Wagner within striking distance in some close losses to Drew and Yale early in the day. But more consecutive losses to Johns Hopkins, Sacred Heart and Haverford put the men's team in unfamiliar territory.
The brand new program fought against the adversity to close the meet with two strong victories over Lafayette and Stevens.
Against Lafayette, freshman Charlie Dolan joined Vinci in going 3-0, helping the Seahawks breeze past the Leopards in the sabre competition. In the épée bouts, freshman Ismael Chavez's 3-0 effort, which included the match sealing victory, helped elevate Wagner to a 5-4 victory, proving pivotal in the 15-12 overall win over Lafayette.
Against Stevens, all three weapon bouts favored the Seahawks. Sabre and foil walked away with 5-4 victories, leaving épée with a 6-3 advantage over the Ducks.
Vinci, Dolan and Chavez all earned ten-plus victories on the day.
The fencing teams will return to action on Sunday, November 19 at the Northeast Fencing Conference Varsity Meet, hosted by Boston College, to conclude the fall season.
