Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's soccer team scored three times in Thursday night's 3-1 victory over Saint Francis U at Hameline Field.
Graduate student Juliana Rafaniello scored twice, while freshman Alana Goldsmith cashed in on a penalty kick in between the two Rafaniello goals.
In the 41st minute, Rafaniello scored off a corner kick. The ball trickled through the Red Flash defense, allowing the Old Bridge, NJ native to score the opening goal of the contest.
Two minutes into the second half, a handball in the penalty area by Saint Francis U gave Wagner a penalty kick. Head coach Phil Casella turned to the freshman Goldsmith, who knocked in the first goal of her career to make it a 2-0 game.
The Red Flash cut the deficit to one in the 70th minute, but Rafaniello struck again with a beautiful left-footed shot. Fellow graduate student Madison Carr assisted on the score.
Wagner fired off 20 shots to Saint Francis U's six. Freshman Jess Maraia, who came on as a substitute in tonight's contest, matched the Red Flash with six shots of her own.Â
Junior Olivia Rubbo, Rafaniello and Carr all had three shots apiece as well.
The Seahawks are winners of two in a row and they will look to make it three when they travel to Stonehill on Sunday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 am.
