Staten Island, NY - The Wagner women's soccer team dropped its final home regular season game to FDU on Thursday evening by a score of 2-1.
Freshman Jess Maraia got the Seahawks started in the 14th minute off of a remarkable assist by senior Kayla Barbosa. Barbosa sent the ball from midfield into FDU's penalty area where Maraia laid in wait for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Maraia's goal helped fuel a stellar first half from junior Sam Hughes. The reigning NEC Defensive Player of the Week extended her scoreless stretch to 232 minutes as she made six saves in the opening 45 minutes of action.
It wasn't until the 63rd minute that the Knights got on the board. Katia Cardaba netted the equalizer on a shot well outside the penalty area to make it a 1-1 contest. Then, the freshman scored the go-ahead goal three minutes later on a low, right-footed shot.
Wagner had its chances to score the late equalizer, including a would-be-goal by freshman Caroline Kessler that was overturned for offsides with minutes to spare.Â
The loss slots the Seahawks in as the five seed of the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament with a game to play. They still have a chance to move seed lines as the regular season finale at CCSU on Thursday, October 26 approaches. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
