Swimming & Diving Competes At Iona-Sacred Heart Tri-Meet

New Rochelle, NY - The Wagner men's and women's swimming & diving programs competed in a tri-meet with Iona and Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon.

The women started their season with a 2-0 mark, defeating the hosts Iona, 128-77, and Sacred Heart, 134-103. The men dropped their lone matchup against Iona, 114-109. They did not compete against the Pioneers because they do not have a swim program.

Both programs started their seasons off with victories in the 400-yard medley relay. 

The team of juniors Shamiya Guirre and Madison Petricevic, freshman Rebekka Luoto, and senior Abbie Hassell earned first place with a time of 3:58.50. For the men, it was the team of sophomores Kaan Nalçaci, Joel Knaapi and Alex Magditch, and freshman Jasu Ovaskainen that earned a time of 3:28.61 to place atop the podium.

Overall, the women earned seven individual victories, while the men tallied five.

Sophomore Aura Vilarrasa placed first in two events. The Montagut, Spain native earned the top spot in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke with times of 1:56.29 and 2:09.04, respectively.

Fifth year Olivia Bishop also found the top of the podium in two events. With a time of 24.83, Bishop placed first in the 50-yard freestyle before earning a time of 53.17 in the 100-yard freestyle to earn the top spot. 

Luoto impressed in her first collegiate action, earning first place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke. 

Rounding out the first place finishes for the women was Guirre, who earned first place in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:14.42. 

For the men, Magditch earned the first first place finish of the tri-meet for the men in the 50-yard freestyle. He timed a 21.64 for the top spot of the podium.

Freshman Nikkolai Carrillo had two first place finishes in his Wagner debut. He placed first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:55.58 and in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.52.

Lahti, Finland native Ovaskainen earned his first individual victory with the Seahawks in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.98.

Returning sophomores Ruben Van Gool and Ranger Gavino also placed first in their respective competitions. Van Gool's first place finish in the 500-yard freestyle clocked in at 4:46.06, while Gavino took home first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:10.99.

The two teams ended their day with first and second place finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Vilarrasa, freshman Daniela Moreno Vazquez, Petricevic and Bishop placed first with a time of 3:37.40, while Ovaskainen, Knaapi, sophomore Andrew Strickland and Magditch placed second with a time of 3:10.47.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, October 28 when they take on Fairfield.
