Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College men's basketball team suffered a last-minute 68-63 defeat to Saint Francis U on Saturday afternoon.
Wagner was led by junior
DeLonnie Hunt, who contributed 20 points on 7-14 shooting, including 3-6 accuracy from long range, along with five rebounds. Senior
Brandon Brown notched another double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore
Rob Taylor II added 10 points and eight rebounds.
The deciding sequence came in the final minute of the contest. A
Brandon Brown layup and a free throw by Hunt got the Seahawks within one at 57-56 with one minute to play.
Following three consecutive Red Flash free throws, Hunt once again found the basket to make it a two-point game at 60-58 with 35 seconds to play.
On the ensuing Wagner possession, Brown made it a one-point contest with a three. The Red Flash once again made both free throws, before Hunt came through again on the fastbreak to make it 64-63 with 17 seconds to play, but Saint Francis U survived in a wild finish to earn the victory.
The Seahawks converted on 15-28 shots (53.6%) in the second half after trailing 29-22 at the midway mark and out-rebounded the Red Flash 36-32.
Saint Francis U was led by Josh Cohen's 27 points and improves to 3-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Merrimack on January 16, with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
