North Andover, MA – The Wagner College men's basketball team earned a 62-57 road victory at Merrimack on Monday night.
With the win, the Seahawks split the season series with the Warriors, snap a three-game losing streak, and improve to 9-7 on the year and 2-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play.
Junior
DeLonnie Hunt led all players with 19 points on 7-13 shooting, while senior
Brandon Brown added 17 points and six rebounds. Sophomore
Javier Ezquerra was the third Seahawk in double figures with 11 points, including 3-5 accuracy from long range.
After a Jordan Minor layup gave Merrimack a 54-49 lead with 5:36 to play, Wagner closed the game on a 13-4 run to earn the victory, with
Brandon Brown scoring nine points during the run, which included two traditional three-point plays.
In the first half, Wagner jumped out to an early lead, highlighted by a thunderous dunk by Hunt midway through the first period.
The Seahawks led 33-28 at the midway mark, before Merrimack fought back to regain the lead. Both teams went back and forth throughout the second half, before the late Wagner push gave them the win.
Wagner held a slim 29-27 advantage on the glass and shot 23-48 (47.9%) from the field, including 7-15 (46.7) from long range, while holding the Warriors to 21-44 (47.7%) shooting on the night.
Next up, Wagner will play host to Central Connecticut and Sacred Heart on Friday and Sunday at the Spiro Sports Center.
