Baseball's Comeback Against Merrimack Falls Short In 6-5 Setback

Lakewood, NJ - The Wagner baseball team was able to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth but Merrimack scored twice in the sixth and eighth before the Seahawks gave it one final ride before falling to the Warriors, 6-5, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at ShoreTown Ballpark.

Wagner (12-29; 8-10 NEC) had four players produce multi-hit games on the afternoon, with Dante Faicchio, Griffin Selby, Cody Bey, and David Melfi each collecting two hits while Melfi and AJ Vigliotti drove in a pair of RBIs. Faicchio produced the Green & White's other RBI on the day.

Daniel Merkel (0-6) went five innings while giving up four runs on six hits in taking the loss. He walked a pair of batters while recording a strikeout. Connor Hayden went three frames, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits while fanning two and walking one. Zach Gorman worked a scoreless ninth.

Three Merrimack (12-26-1; 7-11 NEC) had multi-hit days, led by Scott Elliott, who tallied three hits for the Warriors. Jake Macchi and Braydon Dolbashian added two hits. Macchi scored three runs while Anthony Gentile plated home two RBIs.

Cedric Gillette picked up the win after allowing just two runs on five hits while walking three. Vin Zappulla came on in relief, tossing three innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Timmy Kalantzakos picked up his fifth save despite allowing two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Seahawks got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Cody Bey led off the frame with a single to left before moving to second on a grounder by Quinn Mimnaugh. A wild pitch advanced Bey to third with just one out. On the second pitch of the at-bat, Melfi flew out to right field as Bey tagged up from third and scored, giving Wagner a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Merrimack took the lead. Elliott reached on a bunt single before Merkel was able to pick him off at first. Macchi sent a one-out single to left before Dolbashian sent a two-out single to center, giving the Warriors a pair of runners on base.

Michael Golankiewicz walked to load the bases before Gentile sent a hard-hit single to second, plating both Dolbashian and Macchi, giving Merrimack its first lead of the game, 2-1.

The Seahawks evened the score in the bottom of the fifth as Faicchio launched a no-doubter that cleared the left-field wall, tying the game at 2-2. For Faicchio, it marked the senior's ninth home run of the season.

The Warriors regained the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring twice, to take a 4-2 lead. Macchi led off with a single before Gemelli walked, which concluded Merkel's afternoon. Hayden came on as both runners moved up on a wild pitch. A couple of pitches in, a second rogue pitch went to the backstop, as Macchi was able to score the go-ahead score, 3-2.

Dolbashian lofted a deep fly to right, as Gemelli tagged up and scored the second run of the inning.

The Seahawks got one back in the bottom of the inning. Bey singled off Vin Zappulla before moving to second. Melfi, with the count in his favor at 1-0, doubled to left field as Bey came racing from second to cut the lead to one, 4-3. Wagner threatened but an inning-ending double play stopped the threat.

Merrimack tacked on two more in the top of the eighth. Elliott tripled to start the inning before coming in on a wild pitch that made it 5-3. Macchi reached on a throwing error by Ruggiero at short. Hayden was able to settle in, striking out Gemelli. The next batter, Dolbashian, doubled to left-center, giving the visitors a pair of runners before Golankiewciz was intentionally walked, to set up a potential double play.

Gentile reached on a fielding error by Kobayashi in left as Macchi came into score, as Merrimack doubled up the Seahawks, 6-3.

Kalantzakos came on for Zappulla. Selby connected on a two-out double to left to start the rally. Lukas Torres and Bey both walked. AJ Vigliotti came on as a pinch-hitter and laced a two-run single up the middle, as Torres and Selby both scored, cutting Merrimack's lead to one, 6-5.

Melfi had a chance to walk it off but struck out swinging as Merrimack held on for the series win.

Wagner will hit the road this upcoming weekend, as the Seahawks will resume their season series with Central Connecticut up in New Britain, CT, beginning May 6 and running through May 8.
