Baseball Opens Weekend Series With 10-2 Home Victory Over Sacred Heart

Faicchio comes within a triple of the cycle; Ruggiero collects 100th career hit; Mimnaugh drives in four RBIs

Trenton, NJ - The Wagner baseball team opened up its weekend series by scoring a run in each of the first four innings in posting a 10-2 win on Friday afternoon over the Sacred Heart University Pioneers. 

Wagner (6-22; 3-4 NEC) had six players record multi-hit games on the afternoon, led by Dante Faicchio, who came within a triple of completing the cycle, as he finished 4 for 5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. 
 
Mike Ruggiero went 3 for 3 at the plate, as he became the 64th member of the 100-hit club while also scoring two runs. Maimu Kobayashi, Mateo Matthews, Griffin Selby, and Shane Harkins each finished with two hits while Quinn Mimnauagh went 1 for 4, clubbing his first career home run and driving in a career-best four RBIs in the victory. 
 
Frankie Wright (3-3) earned his third win of the season by throwing six innings of two-run ball while giving up six hits, and three walks while striking out three batters.  Jake Toporek earned his third save of the season, tossing three scoreless innings of one-hit ball, walking one, and striking out three batters. 

Justin Levito led the way for the Pioneers with two hits, a run scored, and driving in one of the team's RBIs. Dante D'amore was one of five Sacred Heart batters with a hit while adding the second RBI. Chase Jeter took the loss after he allowed five runs on seven hits in two innings of work.

Wagner-Sacred Heart - Highlights

With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Faicchio launched his team-leading seventh home run of the season, a solo shot that cleared the left-field wall as Wagner went ahead 1-0. 
 

 
For the Laguna Beach, CA native, moves up on the single-season home run list, as he joins former Seahawks Phil Capra (2017), Anthony Godino (2017), Nick Dini (2015), and Vin Avella (2007) for 13th-place. 

Wright was able to retire the Pioneers in order in the top of the second as the Seahawks tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Shane Harkins sent a one-out single to left field before Kobayashi was able to single back up the middle to plate home Harkins for a 2-0 lead. 
 

 
Lukas Torres was hit with a pitch to give the Green & White two runners on as Faicchio stepped in and laced a double to left-center that scored Kobayashi, giving Wagner a three-run advantage. 
 

 
The visitors got on the board in the top of the third, as Levito connected on a solo home run to left field that cut into the Seahawks' lead, 3-1. Sacred Heart was able to get the next two men on before Justin Jordan was thrown out at home by Matthews, who fired a strike to Harkins, who applied the tag. 
 
In the home half of the third, Ruggiero etched became the 64th member of the 100-hit club, as the fifth-year Seahawk sent a 2-1 pitch into left field. 
 

 

 
 
Griffin Selby doubled to left giving Wagner a pair of runners on as Sacred Heart went to the bullpen in the form of Charlie Costello. Costello faced Mimnaugh, who sent lofted a fly ball to right field as Ruggiero tagged up from third and scored, making it a 4-1 Wagner lead. The Seahawks weren't done, as Ethan Valdez added an RBI single that brought in Selby, making it 5-1. 

The Pioneers got one back in their half of the fourth. Joe Emerson walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before coming home on the D'Amore RBI single to centerfield, which brought Sacred Heart to within three, 5-2. 

The Seahawks scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, building a five-run cushion, as Matthews doubled to right field, bringing in both Faicchio and Torres, as Wagner took a 7-2 advantage.The home team opened the game up in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Ruggiero added his third hit of the contest, which was followed by Selby's second hit of the day as SHU went to the bullpen in bringing in David Aufiero. Mimnaugh worked the count to 1-1 before uncorking a towering, three-run home run, the first of his career and fourth RBI of the day as the Seahawks upped its lead to 10-2. 
 

 
Wagner and Sacred Heart resume the series on Saturday afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch from Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
