Seahawks Fall To Columbia On Wednesday Afternoon

New York, NY - For the first time in nearly 19 years, the Wagner baseball team squared off against local rival Columbia University following a change to the Seahawks' schedule.

The Green & White (5-22) cut into a 4-0 lead with two runs in their half of the fifth before the Lions scored four times in the bottom half of the frame while adding two more in the bottom of the sixth in posting a 10-2 win over Wagner on Wednesday afternoon.

Today's matchup marked the 15th overall meeting between the two schools, as Columbia now leads the head-to-head series 8-7.

Maimu Kobayashi has now reached base safely in 15 straight games, as he led the way for the Seahawks, going 2 for 4. Xavier Baker went 1 for 2 while driving in both of Wagner's runs.

Lukas Torres, Mateo Matthews, and Henry Martinez also added a hit in the contest.

Eli Shedd made his season debut, earning the start and throwing a scoreless inning in which he recorded a walk and a strikeout. Brandon Demma (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on four hits while walking a batter.

Joshua Solomon and Tyler MacGregor powered the Columbia (11-13) offense, as both drove in three RBIs while Solomon led the way with two hits. He, along with Sky Selinsky, and Jacob Phelps scored twice in the contest.

Billy Black (1-1) earned his first victory of the season, going four innings in which he didn't give up a run on three hits while striking out one and walking one. The tandem of Brandon Madrigal and Camron Hubble tossed the final three innings, giving up three hits with Madrigal striking out three batters.

Shedd recorded his first strikeout of the year as he got Cole Hage to strike out looking.

Demma came on in the second and got the first batter he saw in Hayden Schott to fly out to Martinez in center. Selinsky and Soloman each singled to left. The Lions got the first score as Selinsky came in on the wild pitch to make it 1-0.

Austin Mowrey brought in Soloman on an RBI single to center field that made it 2-0. Phelps connected Columbia's fourth straight hit in the frame before Hage walked on four straight pitches to load the bases.

Mowrey scored on the second wild pitch of the inning by Demma, which increased the CU lead to 3-0. Anton Lazits sent an RBI sacrifice fly to left that brought home Phelps as Columbia capped off the four-run inning.

The Seahawks cut the deficit in half at 4-2 in the top of the fifth. Will Parkinson replaced Black and hit both Quinn Mimnaugh and Henry Martinez to give the Seahawks runners on first and second with no outs.

Madrigal came on to replace Parkinson and face Baker. With the count full, Baker ripped a bases-clearing double to left field as Wagner now trailed by two. With two outs, Baker advanced to third before Dante Faicchio was hit and moved to second on a wild pitch.

Matthews drew a walk to load the bases but Mike Ruggiero struck out looking to end the scoring threat.

In the bottom of the inning, Columbia scored four runs on one hit taking an 8-2 lead. MacGregor plated the first run with a grounder to Ruggiero. Eric Crouse came on for Nick DeCarlo and walked Selinsky while EJ Krutzman, who walked against DeCarlo, stole second to give the Lions two runners on base.

Solomon stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with one swing, as he sent a three-run home run over the left center field wall.

In the bottom of the sixth, Phelps walked and advanced to second on a throwing error by Michael Cunningham on the failed pickoff attempt. A second walk to Hage gave the Lions two on.

Cunningham settled down and got Lazits to fly out to left for the first out, but MacGregor doubled down the right-field line which made it 10-2.

Kobayashi started the top of the seventh with a single to right field but Torres grounded into the 4-6-3 double play. Faicchio flew out to left to end the contest due to darkness.

Wagner resumes Northeast Conference (NEC) play this weekend as the Seahawks will host Sacred Heart at Trenton Thunder Ballpark, beginning on Friday, April 8, and running through Sunday, April 10.

Friday's contest will be streamed on NEC Front Row as Joey Jarzynka will have the call at 3:00 p.m.
