Wagner-Merrimack Highlights

Postgame Comments - Wagner Starting Pitcher, Frankie Wright

Wagner, who improves to 12-27 overall and 8-8 in Northeast Conference (NEC) games, earned its first-ever win over the Warriors, who fall to 10-26-1 and 5-11 in league contests.

Frankie Wright (4-4) earned his fourth win of the season after allowing just one run on five hits over six innings of work. The Egg Harbor Township, NJ native walked four but fanned six batters.

Jagger Duquette (Sv, 1) earned his first collegiate save after tossing three scoreless innings in relief of Wright, squandering just five hits while striking out a batter.

David Melfi, Griffin Selby, and Cody Bey each had two hits in the ballgame with Melfi plating two RBIs to pace the Wagner offense. Maimu Kobayashi and Selby added an RBI in the win.

Christian Gemelli, Jake Macchi, Scott Elliott, and Kurtis Stadnicki had two hits apiece for the visitors while Stadnicki drove in the only run for the Warriors on the afternoon.

Wyatt Villella took the loss despite throwing eight innings, in which he walked three and struck out one while giving up the four runs on nine hits.

Wagner got on the board as Selby belted a run-scoring double to right field that brought in Dante Faicchio, but Selby was thrown out at third, trying to extend the double into a triple.

The Seahawks tacked on two more in the bottom of the second taking a three-run advantage. Lukas Torres led off with a walk before Bey singled to left field. With one out in the inning, Melfi delivered the first of his two RBIs, singling in Bey.

Kobayashi worked the count even at 2-2 before lacing a single up the middle that brought in Quinn Mimnaugh as the Green & White extended the lead to 3-0.

Merrimack scored its lone run in the top of the sixth. Elliott doubled to left field before a hit by a pitch to Bryadon Dolbashian gave the visitors a pair of runners on base. Wright was able to refocus and induced a 6-4-3 double for the first two out of the inning.

Stadnicki was able to put the lone blemish on Wright's ledger, singling to right field that scored Elliott as Merrimack cut the Wagner lead to 3-1.

Wagner sealed the game on Melfi's sacrifice fly to center that plated home Selby, as the Seahawks went back up by three.

In the ninth, Duquette was able to get the first out but Alex Haba doubled down the left-field line before moving to third on the grounder off the bat of Gemelli.

On the first pitch he saw, Macchi flew out to Kobayashi in left as Wagner secured the series-opening win over the Warriors and the program's first over Merrimack.

These two teams continue their weekend series tomorrow with a 1:00 pm start.
