Baseball Evens Weekend Series With Conference-Leaders FDU; Shutout Knights, 3-0

Trenton, NJ -  The Wagner baseball team opened the game with three runs which proved to be all that they needed as sophomore left-hander Eli Shedd spun six scoreless innings of two-hit ball as the Seahawks took the middle game against Northeast Conference (NEC) leaders, FDU, defeating the Knights 3-0 on Saturday afternoon from Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

Wagner (10-26; 7-7 NEC) produced eight hits, three of which came in the opening inning, as Dante Faicchio, Griffin Selby, and Quinn Mimnaugh each had two hits for the Green & White.

Lukas Torres and Cody Bey each had a hit and an RBI, along with Selby, as Wagner earned the shutout victory.

Shedd, making his second start of the season, did not allow an extra-base hit while yielding three walks and striking out four for his first win of the season. Eric Crouse earned his first collegiate save in a Wagner uniform, firing off the final three scoreless innings, allowing just a hit while fanning four.

Tommy Verga, Tom Ruscitti, and Brelon Harden had the hits for the visitors on the afternoon. Rich Racobaldo (2-3) was tagged with the loss, giving up the three runs while walking four and striking out three batters. Jude Baxt finished the game, not allowing a run over his three innings of work while giving up five hits and striking out one.

Shedd needed just nine pitches to retire the Knights in order to start the contest. The Seahawks erupted for three runs in their half of the first to take the early lead.

Maimu Kobayashi was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and moved to second on a single by Faicchio. Selby laced a 1-1 double down the right-field line that plated home Kobayashi for Wagner's first run of the contest.

The next batter, Torres, lofted a sacrifice fly to left, which brought in Faicchio as the Seahawks went up 2-0. Ahead in the count 1-0, Bey singled to left field and moved to third after the Knights' left fielder misplayed the ball, which allowed Selby to score and Bey to advance to third as Wagner increased the lead to three.

The second-year starter Shedd was able to work around a pair of one-out singles in the second before stranding them on base after getting Harden to strike out swinging.

The Knights tried to mount a comeback in their half of the fourth. Back-to-back walks gave the visitors runners on base before Ruscitti reached on a fielder's choice, with Selby throwing a strike to Mike Ruggiero at second, forcing out Verga.

Shedd would get a lift from his defense, as Ruggiero turned the inning-ending 6-4-3 double play, escaping the threat. The Pittsburgh, PA southpaw thew up a scoreless fifth, ending the frame with a bookend of strikeouts.

Wagner looked for more runs in the sixth, as Bey reached on a hit by pitch to start the stanza. DiMaggio Cazares reached on a fielder's choice before Shane Harkins flew out to left.

Mimnaugh singled through the left side giving Wagner a pair of runners on, but, Kobayashi grounded one to short that forced out Mimnaugh for the final out of the frame.

Crouse entered in the seventh, getting the first two batters to ground out before allowing his lone blemish on his ledger, a double to left by Harden. He was able to strike out Justin Sierra on four pitches, ending the frame.

The Seahawks looked for more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Faicchio reached on an infield single to short before Selby followed with a single but Faicchio was thrown out trying to advance.

Crouse opened the eighth with back-to-back strikeouts before Hunter D'Amato flew out to end the inning.

Down to their last frame, Verga was hit by an errant pitch by Crouse, who was able to strand him at first as Ruscitti flew out to Faicchio in right and pinch-hitter David Bordieri Jr. swinging at strike three to take the middle game of the series.

The series concludes on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. from Trenton Thunder Ballpark. Sunday's contest will be streamed live on NEC Front Row as Joey Jarzykna brings you the call.
