Baseball Clubs Five Home Runs In 16-6 Road Win At Mount St. Mary's On Friday

Emmitsburg, MD - The Wagner baseball team resumed Northeast Conference (NEC) play in a big way, as the Seahawks clubbed five home runs in routing the Mount St. Mary's, 16-6, on Friday afternoon from E.T. Straw Family Stadium.

Griffin Selby and Xavier Baker each had four hits for Wagner (4-19; 2-2 NEC) with Selby driving in a career-high five RBIs on the afternoon. Maimu Kobayashi added three hits and a team-leading four runs.Dante Faicchio and Mike Ruggiero each had two hits with Faicchio driving in four RBIs in the win this afternoon. 

Frankie Wright (2-3) earned the victory after giving up four runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits while walking one and striking out a career-high eight batters. Classmate Jake Toporek earned his second save of the year, going four innings in which he allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out a season-high five. 

Four Mountaineers had two hits on the day with Ryan Fisher driving in three of the six runs. Thomas Bramley was credited with the Mount's fourth RBI of the afternoon. Bryant Shives was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) over 4.2 innings on nine hits. 

The two teams were deadlocked at 4-4 after the first two innings. Wagner got on the board with an RBI single by Ruggiero in the first and Selby followed with a double to center field that brought in Ruggiero.
 

In the bottom of the first, Fisher delivered a two-run single to center field to tie the game.


In the second, Lukas Torres plated home AJ Vigliotti on the RBI grounder to first before Faicchio lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfield as Wagner went ahead 4-2. Mount St. Mary's wasted little time, as Tyler Long was able to bring home Hunter Hebert despite grounding into the 6-4-3 double play. Giovanni Calamia scored on a passed ball that tied the game at 4-4. 
 

Following a scoreless third inning, Wagner scored three times in taking a 7-4 lead. Baker sent a one-out double to left field before coming home on the two-run home run to center field off the bat of Kobayashi. 
 

After Torres ground out back to the pitcher, Faicchio clubbed his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field as the Seahawks went up by three. 

Wagner continued to add to its lead, scoring four times in the sixth as Selby cleared the bases with a grand slam to left-center field. 

The Green & White didn't let up, as they tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh, upping the lead to ten, 14-4. Baker and Kobayashi reached on singles and would execute a double steal, as Baker came home on the play.  

With one out, Faicchio took over the team lead in home runs, as he connected on his sixth of the season, a two-run home run that cleared the right center field wall.
 

Mount brought the deficit back to single digits as Bramley brought in Long on an RBI groundout.  
A batter later, Fisher lofted a sacrifice fly to left, as Tyler Grodell was able to tag up from third and cross the plate.

The visitors scored their final runs of the contest in the top of the eighth. Henry Martinez came on as a pinch-hitter and sent a solo home run to right field off of Derek Huff. Brandon Glowacki pinch-hit for Torres and was able to bring home Vigliotti on a ground out to third.  

In the bottom of the ninth, Toporek was able to get Grodell to pop out to Ruggiero for the first out of the inning. Kai Cummings came in as a pinch-hitter for Fisher, but Toporek was able to strike him out swinging. A walk to Brady Drawbaugh gave the Mount a runner on first but Toporek was able to regain his composure and strike out Connor Buggy looking as Wagner earned their second conference victory of the season. 

These two teams will continue the weekend series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
