Women’s Lacrosse Looks To Extend Winning Streak To Three Against Saint Francis U On Saturday

The Wagner women's lacrosse team will look to extend its winning streak to three games when they welcome Saint Francis U to Hameline Field on Saturday afternoon.

Last Time Out
The Seahawks defeated in-state rival LIU on Wednesday afternoon, 10-4 in a historic day for the program. Graduate student Madeline Seims tallied her 150th career point moving her tied for eighth all-time in program history while senior goalkeeper Lauren DiStefano recorded her 300th career save as a member of the Seahawks.
 
The Seahawks put a stamp on the contest as they outscored LIU 4-1 in the opening frame behind two free-position goals from graduate student Victoria Tucci, one goal from Madeline Seims, and one free-position goal from Kasey Dorney. With 15 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, Lauren DiStefano recorded her 300th career save as a member of the Green & White.

Tucci continued her strong effort in the second quarter as she tallied both Wagner goals in the second stanza. Her second goal of the frame was assisted by Kasey Dorney as Wagner took a 6-2 lead into the halftime intermission.

Wagner outscored LIU in the third quarter behind two goals from Madeline Seims. Her second goal of the quarter gave her 150 career points as a Wagner Seahawk and put her tied for eighth with former teammate and former Seahawk Lauren Ednie as Seims now has 152 points.
 
With an 8-3 lead heading into the final stanza, Tucci and Seims each added another goal to preserve a 10-4 victory for Wagner.
Victoria Tucci tallied a career high five goals to go along with one assist, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls. Classmate Madeline Seims tallied four goals on seven shots while Kasey Dorney scored once, dished out one assist, and tallied four draw controls. Lauren DiStefano stopped 10 out of 14 shots in the victory.

Seahawk Milestones
Graduate student garnered her 100th carer point on Saturday, March 26, against Central Connecticut state when she tallied four goals in the contest. Peluso joined classmate Madeline Seims as the only two current Seahawks to eclipse the century mark in career points.

Milestone Watch
Victoria Tucci stands one point away from the century mark as she has 99 career points after a six-point effort on Wednesday.
Kasey Dorney is eight points away from the century mark as she sits at 92 career points.

Aileen Hannan Claims NEC Recognition
Senior defender was named an Northeast Conference (NEC) Prime Performer on Monday afternoon for her strong performances last week against Siena and Central Connecticut State.
 

Against Siena on Wednesday, March 23, the Rockville, MD native scooped four ground balls and caused four turnovers. Against Central Connecticut State on Saturday, March 26, Hannan scooped six ground balls, caused three turnovers and tallied one assist.

Hannan leads the NEC In with 33 ground balls and 3.30 ground balls per game. The senior also leads the conference with 21 caused turnovers.

Historic NEC Run
Wagner has reached the NEC title game in every season since 2014 while claiming a championship in 2016, 2018, and 2019. During the run to seven consecutive title games, the Green & White have finished second in the regular season in 2021, 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, and 2014. Wagner entered the 2017 NEC tournament as the #3 seed. In 2014, the Seahawks entered the season picked seventh in the preseason poll and claimed second in the regular season and earned a trip to the conference championship game.

Wagner begins conference play with a 2-0 record for the fourth consecutive season.

Last Time Against Saint Francis U
The Seahawks own a 9-1 overall record over the Red Flash and will look for their fifth consecutive victory against Saint Francis U. Last season, the two teams played back-to-back games on April 24 and April 28, 2021, as Wagner won both. In the first game at Hameline Field, the Seahawks claimed a decisive 19-4 victory before traveling to Loretto, PA and defeating claiming a 16-13 victory.
 

Through the two meetings, Stefani Peluso tallied five goals, junior Megan Greco recorded six goals, Kasey Dorney recorded eight ground balls, eight caused turnovers, and 17 draw controls while Madeine Seims recorded six goals and four assists.

About Saint Francis U
The Red Flash enter Hameline Field with a 4-6 overall record and 1-1 mark in NEC play. Their last time out, they defeated conference foe Howard, 21-5, on Wednesday.

Saint Francis is led by senior Autumn McHenry who leads the team with 32 points, 11 assists, and 42 draw controls. Graduate student Amanda Heidt leads the Red Flash with 23 goals.

What's Next
Following their contest with Saint Francis U, the Seahawks will travel to Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, March 6 for a rematch of last season's NEC championship game.
