#15 Women’s Water Polo Set To Host Four Conference Games This Weekend

Staten Island, NY - For the first time since 2019, the #15 Wagner women's water polo team is set to host four games this weekend at the Spiro Sports Center.

Wagner hasn't lost a game at the friendly confines of the Spiro Sports Center since they were defeated by Hartwick College, 18-17, on February 24, 2018.

Last Time Out
This past weekend, Wagner claimed victories over conference opponents Villanova and the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). On Saturday against Villanova, 22-7. The Seahawks moved to 38-3 lifetime against the Wildcats while senior goalkeeper Kristina Bell stopped seven shots in three quarters of action while fifth-year senior Malia Josephson tallied two goals to go along with three assists and three steals. Junior Abbey Simshauser scored four times while dishing out three assists.
 
Against VMI on Sunday, Wagner claimed a 28-12 victory. Senior Sofia Diaz Alvarez tallied 10 goals in the contest which is a single game program for Wagner women's water polo. She broke the record of sophomore Andrea Arias, who set the record on February 6 with nine goals against Siena. Before that, Diaz Alvarez held the previous record when she scored eight times against Indiana on January 25, 2019.

Sofia Diaz Alvarez Claims MAAC Honors
Sofia Diaz Alvarez was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Offensive Player of the week on Wednesday afternoon.

​​This is the first time this season Diaz Alvarez has claimed a MAAC weekly honor and the eighth time in her career on Grymes Hill. The Madrid, Spain native claimed seven weekly honors during the 2019 season en route to claiming MAAC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-MAAC recognition. During the 2019 season, Diaz Alvarez claimed Rookie of the Week three times and Offensive Player of the Week four times. On February 13, 2019, the then-freshman Diaz Alvarez was named Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week.
 
This season, the Madrid, Spain native has started and appeared in all 23 contests while leading the team with 116 shots and is second on the team with 56 goals, 84 points, and 31 steals.

On January 21, Diaz Alvarez was named Co-Preseason MAAC Player of the Year and named to the Preseason All-MAAC team.

Seahawks Move To #15 In The CWPA Poll
For the eighth consecutive week, the Seahawks remain the highest ranked east coast program in the poll and is the highest ranked MAAC team in the poll. Wagner is joined by LIU who checked in at #24 and Marist who checked in at #24(T). The Seahawks will host LIU and Marist this weekend at the Spiro Sports Center.
 
After checking in at #23 in the CWPA preseason poll, Wagner moved up to #17 in week one before moving up to #14 in week two before spending four weeks at that spot. Wagner was pushed back one spot and spent one week at #15. After defeating three teams who received recognition from the week six CWPA poll at the Harvard Invitational on March 5 and 6, Wagner reclaimed the #14 spot where they lived for the past two weeks before going back to #15.

Conference Success
The Seahawks entered the 2022 MAAC portion of their schedule after opting out of the 2021 season sporting a 80-5 record since 2014. The 2014 season was the first of six consecutive MAAC Championships for Wagner. Prior to the run beginning in 2014, the Seahawks appeared in the MAAC Championship game 2011, 2012, and 2013 but fell to Iona all three times.

The Seahawks have appeared in 13 MAAC Championship games while claiming a conference leading nine titles. Prior to the 2021 season, either Wagner, Marist, or Iona has appeared in every championship since 2003 and those three schools are the only three to ever capture a title.

In 2016, 2017, and 2018 Wagner went unbeaten in conference play as the Seahawks went 12-0 in 2016 and 14-0 in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, Wagner finished the conference schedule with a 14-1 record and a 2-0 record in 2020 as the season was cut short due to COVID-19.

The Seahawks last conference loss came in the 2019 regular season finale on a forfeit against Marist. Before that forfeit, Wagner's last MAAC defeat came 1,464 days before on April 11, 2015, against the Red Foxes.

Wagner enters this weekend with a 4-0 mark in conference play this season as they have defeated La Salle, St. Francis Brooklyn, Villanova, and VMI.

About #24(T) Marist
The Seahawks will welcome the defending MAAC champions who are sporting a 15-9 overall record and 2-0 record in conference play.

The Red Foxes are currently riding a three-game winning streak as they will be traveling from New Rochelle, NY as they will visit conference opponent Iona at 9:00 AM on Saturday.

These two teams last squared off in February 2020 as Wagner claimed a 12-10 victory over Marist as Wagner extended their record to 29-14 lifetime against Marist.

About Siena
Siena enters Saturday's contest with a 3-12 record overall and an 0-2 mark in conference play as they will look to snap an eight game losing streak.

This is the second time the Seahawks and Saints will square off this season as Wagner defeated Siena 29-6 at the Bruno Classic. The Seahawks posted a single-game goal record in the contest as Andrea Arias tallied nine goals in the game.

About VMI
The Keydets enter the Spiro Sports Center with a 3-15 overall record and an 0-4 mark in MAAC play. VMI will also look to snap an eight-game losing streak.

This is the third time these two teams will meet this season, Wagner has claimed victories in both contests after outscoring VMI 53-16 in two games.

About #23 LIU
The Sharks enter their contest with Wagner sporting an 11-4 record and riding a seven-game win streak. This is the first time in program history that the Seahawks and Sharks will compete against each other.

What's Next
Following the four-game home stand the Seahawks will travel to Siena in Loudonville, NY for a 1:00 P.M. contest before heading to New Rochelle, NY to take on Iona at 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 2.
