Baseball Drops Series Finale To Pennsylvania On Sunday

Philadelphia, PA - The Wagner College baseball team held an early two-run lead before the University of Pennsylvania Quakers scored five runs in the bottom of the second as the Seahawks couldn't complete the comeback attempt, falling in the series finale, 9-4, on Sunday afternoon.

Maimu Kobayashi and Dante Faicchio each had two hits for Wagner (2-15) while Faicchio, Mateo Matthews, and Quinn Mimanuagh each added an RBI. Eric Crouse (0-2) allowed four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of work in his third start of the season.

Tommy Courtney, Wyatt Henseler, and Craig Larsen each had three hits for Penn (11-5) while Seth Werchan added two hits. Henseler drove in three RBI while Larsen and Asa Wilson each scored two runs. Brian Zeldin took the ball for the start, going 1.2 innings before Joe Miller tossed 4.2 innings, giving up a run on four hits while walking four and striking out eight for his third win of the season.

The Seahawks scored first, as Lukas Torres drew a one-out walk before stealing second and moving to third on a throwing error by Wilson. Matthews reached on a fielding error by the Quakers' first baseman, which allowed Torres to score. The visitors tacked on their second score of the game, as Melfi reached on an infield single to third. Mimnaugh doubled to left-center as Melfi scored on the play.

Pennsylvania sparked a five-run inning in the bottom of the second in taking a three-run lead. Larsen led off with a single to left-center. Two straight walks loaded the bases before Crouse was able to get Nate Polo to ground into the 4-6-3 double-play, but Larsen was able to score the Quakers' first run. A hit by a pitch to Wilson gave the home team runners on base as Courtney took the first pitch he saw from Crouse to center field, scoring Palis to tie the game at 2-2.

Ruben Del Castillo came on for Crouse and on the second pitch to Henseler, he connected on a home run to left-center, giving Penn a 5-2 lead.

The Seahawks chipped into the lead with a run in the top of the third, as Matthews clubbed his second home run of the year, a solo shot to right field.

The game remained that way until the bottom of the fifth when Werchan drew a walk with the bases loaded that made it 6-3. Penn added a run in the seventh on Wilson's solo home run to the left that made it 7-3 before Larsen connected on a round-tripper the next inning and Calvin Brown added a pinch-hit RBI single to make 9-3.

The Seahawks rallied in their half of the ninth. Kobayashi led off with a single to center before moving to second on a passed ball. Faicchio doubled home Kobayashi, which cut the lead to 9-4. Matthews walked but the Quakers went to the bullpen in David Shoemaker, who struck out Henry Martinez and Mike Ruggiero to end the ballgame.

The Seahawks will be back in action on March 23, as they close out their lengthy road trip at St. John's.
