#14 Women’s Water Polo Extends Winning Streak To 15 With Day One Sweep At The Aztec Invitational

San Diego, CA – The Wagner women's water polo team defeated Saint Francis University and #20 San Diego State on Friday afternoon to extend the team's winning streak to 15.

The Seahawks 14th consecutive victory began with a sprint victory from junior Skye Nankervis, the opening sprint victory was the first of three victories for the Sydney, Australia native in the contest. Sophomore Andrea Arias put Wagner on the board early in the contest as Wagner went on to outscore Saint Francis 6-0 in the opening quarter. Andrea Arias tallied two goals while seniors Sofia Diaz Alvarez and Pip Nash tallied one goal each. Skye Nankervis and fifth-year senior Malia Josephson rounded out the goal scorers for the Seahawks in the opening quarter.

The Seahawks outscored the Red Flash 4-2 in the second stanza as Arias completed her hat trick of the season as the Madrid, Spin native has a tallied at least a hat trick in eight out of 16 games this season. Along with Arias, sophomore Mar Navarro tallied one goal while junior Abbey Simshauser found the back of the net twice in the second quarter as Wagner took a 10-2 lead into the intermission.
 
Andrea Arias tallied her fourth goal of the contest in the third quarter as Wagner took a 11-4 lead into the final eight minutes.

To open the final quarter, Mar Navarro won her first sprint attempt of the season as classmate Andrea Arias scored her fifth and final goal of the game. Freshmen Carlota Alonso, Emma Stec, and Cephira Parker got on the scoresheet in the final quarter while Pip Nash and Sofia Diaz Alvarez each scored their second goal in the stanza. For Parker, her goal in the fourth quarter was her first as a member of the Seahawks.

 Senior goalkeeper Kristina Bell stopped eight out of 14 shots in the victory while Andrea Arias found the back of the net on all five her shots to go along with four steals. Skye Nankervis scored one goal and tallied two assists to go along with four steals and one block.

#14 Wagner (13) vs. #20 San Diego State (7)
The second game of the day for Wagner began the same as the first game with a Skye Nankervis sprint victory, the junior won all four in the contest. Andrea Arias got the Seahawks on the board to open the contest before both teams went back-and-forth in the opening quarter. Malia Josephson netted the second Wagner goal of the quarter as the teams were deadlocked at two heading to the second frame.

Wagner put a stamp on the contest in the second quarter as they outscored San Diego State 4-0. Carlota Alonso tallied two goals in the quarter while Pip Nash and Malia Josephson each found the back of the net in the frame.
The Green & White expanded on their lead in the third quarter as they outscored the Aztecs 4-3 behind a hat trick from Pip Nash and one goal from Abbey Simshauser.

Malia Josephson found the back of the net twice in the fourth while Skye Nankervis tallied on goal to give Wagner a 13-7 victory.

Pip Nash tallied a season high four goals and three assists while Malia Josephson tallied four goals on eight shots to go along with two assists. Kristina Bell secured her 17th win in between the pipes this season as she stopped 11 shots.

The defeat of San Diego State is the Seahawks 15th consecutive victory, the second highest winning streak in program history as Wagner won 17 consecutive games in 2017 and 2018.

The Seahawks will have a chance to tie the longest winning streak in program history tomorrow as they will wrap up the Aztec Invitational against #13 UC San Diego at 1:30 P.M. (EST) and Austin College at 5:30 P.M. (EST).
