Women’s Lacrosse Set To Begin The 2022 Season At #17 Drexel On Saturday

The Wagner women's lacrosse team is set to begin its season on Saturday against #17 Drexel.

Experience Matters
The Seahawks return three players in seniors Lauren DiStefano, Kasey Dorney, Megan Greco who started all 15 games last season. Graduate students Madeline Seims and Stefani Peluso started all 12 games they participated in last season. Senior Casey Haas and graduate student Giaci Vitolo each started 14 out of 15 games while senior Aileen Hannan started 13 out of 15 contests. Senior Maria Henwood and junior Lindsay MacLachlan started three contests while graduate student Victoria Tucci cracked the starting lineup seven times.
 

Wagner returns four out of its top-five scorers from last season. Megan Greco led the squad with 40 goals while Kasey Dorney scored 37, Madeline Seims scored 28, and Stefani Peluso scored 17. The team also returns four out of its top-five-point scorers from last season, Megan Greco, Kasey Dorney, Madeline Seims, and Stefani Peluso round of the top five after leading point scorer and third leading goal scorer Erin Kerstetter graduated in 2021.

The Newcomers Looking To Make An Impact
After losing eight players to graduation and transfers, the team added seven newcomers to the roster for the 2022 season. The incoming class consists of Ella Marino (Oreland, PA), Kendra Hall (Liverpool, NY), Katie Siverson (Morristown, NJ), Angelina Skowronski (Millstone, NJ), Sophia Colver (Allen, TX), Bryn Bockstie (Forest Hill, MD), and Kendall Tabobandung (Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Ontario, Canada).

Preseason Recognition
Wagner was picked second in the Northeast Conference (NEC) preseason poll and have made an appearance in the top-2 of the NEC preseason poll for the eight consecutive season. This is the first season since 2019 where Wagner wasn't picked #1.
 

Senior midfielder Kasey Dorney was tabbed as the Inside Lacrosse NEC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, the media outlet announced on January 27. Last season, the Deer Park, NY native was named First-Team All-NEC after she led the conference in ground balls, caused turnovers and draw controls per game. Dorney was third on the team in goals and points last season. She had nine games with multiple ground balls and turnovers caused while finishing with seven or more draw controls six times. Dorney also recorded hat tricks on three separate occasions which included a six-goal game against Central Connecticut.

Historic Run
Wagner has reached the NEC title game in every season since 2014 while claiming a championship in 2016, 2018, and 2019.
During the Seahawks run to seven consecutive championship games, the Green & White finished season in the regular season in 2021, 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, and 2014. Wagner entered the 2017 NEC tournament as the #3 seed. In 2014, the Seahawks entered the season picked seventh in the preseason poll and finished second in the regular season while earning a trip to the conference championship game.

The Schedule
Wagner will open its season with eight non-conference matchups. The Seahawks will play Fairfield, Colgate, and Siena at Hameline Field and will travel to Drexel, Manhattan, Vermont, Lehigh and Hofstra. The Seahawks will also travel to Rutgers for a non-conference tilt in the middle of the season.
 

NEC play will begin on March 26 at Hameline Field against Central Connecticut State, the Seahawks will host Saint Francis U, Sacred Heart, and Bryant during conference play.

The Seahawks will travel to LIU, Mount St. Mary's, Merrimack College, and Howard throughout NEC play.

Recapping 2021
The Seahawks enter the 2022 season after falling short of a NEC Tournament three-peat last season. The defending champion, Mount St. Mary's was picked to repeat as NEC champions. Wagner placed eight players on All-NEC teams while former Seahawk Erin Kerstetter nabbed Midfielder of the Year as five out of the last six NEC Midfielder of the Year awards have landed on Grymes Hill.

Current Seahawks Madeline Seims, Kasey Dorney, Aileen Hannan, Casey Haas were all placed on the All-NEC First Team last season while Megan Greco was named to the Second Team and sophomore Ryan Murphy was named to the All-Rookie Team.

As a team last season, Wagner led the NEC in ground balls per game (20.73), shots per game (36.60), caused turnovers per game (10.67) and shots on goal per game (25.60). The Seahawks finished second in goals per game (14.20) and points per game (20.33).

About #17 Drexel
The Dragons enter the 2022 season as the #17 team in the country after winning the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season championship last season, earning te program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament and a top-10 ranking nationally.

Drexel was picked second in the CAA preseason poll behind defending champion James Madison. The Dragons rank second with three preseason all-league honorees; two of them - Karson Harris and Colleen Grady collected preseason All-America recognition from Inside Lacrosse. The duo is joined by midfielder Lucy Scheiderelth on the preseason All-CAA team. 

What's Next
After the trip to Drexel, the Seahawks will host its first game at Hameline Field this season when they welcome Fairfield on Saturday, February 19.
