Women’s Lacrosse Set For Home Opener Against Fairfield On Saturday

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's lacrosse team is set for the first home game in the Kelly McPartland era on Saturday against Fairfield.

Last Time Out
In the first game of the season, the Seahawks fell to #17 Drexel, 17-8. After trailing 1-0 in the contest, graduate student Madeline Seims scored for the first goal of the season for the Seahawks, kick-starting a 3-0 Wagner run that culminated in goals by senior Kasey Dorney and freshman Katie Siverson. Next up, the Dragons went on a 6-0 run to take a 7-3 lead at the half.

At the end of the first half both teams had six draw controls apiece while senior goalkeeper Lauren DiStefano recorded eight saves for the Seahawks. Drexel put a stamp on the contest in the third quarter as they outscored the Seahawks 7-2 to take a 14-5 lead into the final stanza.

Seims and Siverson tallied their second goals of the contest in the frame. The Seahawks scored two goals in the fourth quarter as Seims completed her first hat trick of the season while senior Maria Henwood got on the scoresheet for Wagner.

Lauren DiStefano stopped 18 shots and claimed three ground balls while Seims recorded a hat trick on five shots. Siverson found the back of the net on both of her shots in her Seahawk debut while senior Kasey Dorney scored one goal on five shots and collected five draw controls. Senior Aileen Hannan claimed six ground balls in the loss.

NEC Recognition
On Monday, Madeline Seims and Katie Siverson were both tabbed as Northeast Conference (NEC) Prime Performers after combining for five out of seven Seahawk goals against Drexel. For Siverson, this is the first NEC recognition of her young career after scoring two goals in her Wagner debut. After being selected as a First Team All-NEC last season, Seims started off the 2022 season with a hat trick. The Westbury, NY native was last awarded Player of the Week on March 22, 2021.
 
Historic Run
Wagner has reached the NEC title game in every season since 2014 while claiming a championship in 2016, 2018, and 2019. During the Seahawks run to seven consecutive championship games, the Green & White finished second in the regular season in 2021, 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015, and 2014. Wagner entered the 2017 NEC Tournament as the #3 seed. In 2014, the Seahawks entered the season picked seventh in the Preseason Poll and finished second in the regular season while earning a trip to the NEC Championship.

Last Time Against Fairfield
The last time the Seahawks and Stags met was in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament after Wagner won its second consecutive NEC Championship. The Seahawks claimed a victory in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season as Wagner defeated Fairfield 15-13.

The 2019 roster featured 10 players that are on the 2022 roster: Senior Maria Henwood, graduate student Giaci Vitolo, graduate student Victoria Tucci, senior Ally Turner, graduate student Stefani Peluso, senior Kasey Dorney, senior Lauren DiStefano, senior Amy Rzemieniewsky, graduate student Madeline Seims, and senior Aileen Hannan.

Maria Henwood tallied two goals on three shots while Stefani Peluso dished out three assists and had four shots. Madeline Seims scored a goal and scooped two ground balls while Lauren DiStefano made her second career appearance in the fourth quarter and helped preserve a victory for Wagner.

About Fairfield
The three-time defending MAAC champions, Fairfield claimed 77 overall points and the top overall spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Poll while senior midfielder Kelly Horning was tabbed the 2022 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. The Stags enter Saturday's matchup with Wagner sporting a 1-1 record after falling #23 UConn on Wednesday and defeating Holy Cross in its season opener on Feburary 12.

Following the home opener, Wagner will hit the road for four consecutive contests starting at Manhattan College on Wednesday, February 23.
