Fairfield, CT – The Wagner field hockey team earned its second consecutive trip to the postseason with a 2-1 victory over Fairfield.
Wagner got off and running early in the contest when graduate student Laura Van Hamburg drew a penalty stroke. Classmate
Julia Cruces Pastorino found the back of the net on the ensuing penalty stoke to give Wagner the early lead.
Wagner tallied two shots in the opening frame but prevented Fairfield from tallying a shot.
In the second quarter, neither team was able to find the back of the net while the Stags tallied two shots.
Wagner held a 1-0 lead heading into the second half.
The Seahawks tallied four shots in the third quarter while generating three penalty corner opportunities but were unable to convert.
Fairfield leveled the score with 3:59 remaining in the third quarter, bringing the game to a 1-1 tie heading into the final quarter.
The lone shot of the fourth quarter belonged to Laura Van Hamburg, who found the back of the net off a penalty corner opportunity. Her goal was assisted by sophomore
Emma Lofstedt and graduate student
Agustina Deharbe.
Wagner moves to 10-5 overall while going 5-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. Wagner is also riding a five-game winning streak and is the first NEC team to qualify for the postseason tournament.
Wagner also remains the lone NEC team unbeaten in conference play.
The Seahawks will continue its season on Sunday, October 23 at Rider at 12:00 P.M.
