Men's Water Polo Wraps Day One At The Bruno Classic

Providence, RI - The Wagner men's water polo team opened their 2021 season at the Bruno Classic at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. They concluded the first day of the tournament with an 0-3 record.

The first game of the season saw the Seahawks face off against in-state rival St. Francis Brooklyn. The Seahawks had a dream start jumping out to a 3-0 lead 102 seconds into the action with goals from fifth-year Jack Leighton, sophomore Zysombor Gyemant, and freshman Andrew Cowie. Leighton opened the scoring after winning the first sprint and scoring 17 seconds into the contest. The first quarter had a rapid pace with the Terriers three goals of their own in less than a two-minute span late in the quarter. The opening frame ended at a 3-3 deadlock. Turnovers plagued the Green & White in the second quarter as the Terriers opened a 9-5 lead at the half. St. Francis went 4-for-7 on power plays in the opening half, while Wagner went 1-for-8 .

The second half continued the theme of the second quarter, with the Terriers out-scoring Wagner 7-3; the were held without a goal in the fourth quarter.

Game two of the day pitted the Seahawks against the Santa Clara Broncos. Santa Clara won their first game of the tournament with a 14-11 victory over the hosts Brown University. For the second straight game, Wagner got out to an early lead with two goals from Oliver Fodor in the first three minutes, the first coming 15 seconds into the contest. The quartr ended 4-all. The second quarter followed suit as both teams continued to battle back and forth, Fodor completed his hat trick early in the quarter as he would finish with five in the first half. The Seahawks took a 10-8 lead into the break.

Wagner continued their strong play in the third quarter with freshman Mattia Bognolo, freshman Andrew Cowie, sophomore Zsombor Gyemant, and junior Jerry Alamo all scoring, Bognolo's and Cowie's goals were their second of the game. They led 14-11 going into the fourth, but Santa Clara rallied to tie the game at 15 before Nico Valls scored the eventual game-winner with 1:17 remaining for the Broncos.

The first day of the Bruno Classic concluded for Wagner with a tilt against the hosts, Brown University. The hosts entered the final game of the day 1-1 with a win against Austin College and a loss against Santa Clara.

For the third straight game, the Seahawks opened the scoring with Zsombor Gyemant's eighth goal of the day, but the Bears closed the quarter on a 4-1 run, with Fodor scoring the Wagner goal, his seventh of the day. The Seahawks opened the second frame on a 3-0 run to claim a 5-4 lead before Brown evened the score. The first half closed with Brown holding an 8-5 lead. Junior Kevin Roach replaced sophomore goalkeeper Ethan Zirh, who had played every minutes of the first 2.5 games, to begin the second half. The teams again went back and forth in the third, scoring four goals apiece, with freshman Vaughn Bui netting his first career goal for the Green and White. With the Bears holding a 12-9 lead going into the final frame of the day, the teams yet again traded goals back and forth, as the game ended with Brown still in front by three. Fodor's four goals for the game gave him 10 on the day.

The Bruno Classic wraps tomorrow when the Seahawks will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts on the campus of Harvard University to play the host Crimson at 10:15 A.M. before their final game of the tournament against MIT at 2:45 P.M.
