Claremont & La Verne, California – The Wagner men's water polo team will travel to California to participate in the Gary Troyer Tournament. The Seahawks will take on #14 Santa Clara and Whitter College on Friday before wrapping up play on Saturday against Chapman and Pomona Pitzer.
Last Time Out for Wagner…
- The Green & White dropped three contests, two of which coming in MAWPC action against Navy and Bucknell.
- Wagner was edged by the Midshipmen, 7-6, despite the Seahawks holding an early 2-1 advantage after the first quarter.
- Senior Vuk Bulajic powered the Seahawks attack with a hat trick while junior Oliver Fodor scored twice and drew seven exclusions.
- Against Princeton, the Seahawks were outscored 5-0 in the opening five minutes before the Tigers added to its leads and picked up a 17-11 win.
- Freshman Kyle Chambers scored all three of his goals in the second half of play while junior Karl Lovett found the back of the net on two chances.
- In the finale against Bucknell, the Seahawks and Bison were pitted in a low-scoring tilt with Bucknell recording a 9-5 win.
- Sophomore Zsombor Gyemant powered the Wagner offense with a hat trick while Bulajic added to his scoring total with a goal in the second half.
- Junior netminder Ethan Zirh made seven stops in the match.
Leading The Way For The Seahawks...
- Junior Oliver Fodor has been anchoring the Wagner offense this season, leading the team in goals (52), shots (103), shooting percentage (.505), and exclusions drawn (60).
- Gyemant paces the team in assists (31), and points (67).
- Zirh, who has started in all 15 contests for the Green & White, has made 112 saves on 293 shots faced.
Scouting The Opposition...
#14 Santa Clara University Broncos
- The Broncos enter the weekend with an overall record of 6-4.
- In its last contest, Santa Clara earned a 19-7 conference victory over Biola.
- Seven players for the Broncos netted two goals in the win while Jake Taylor led the way for the club with three assists.
- Goalkeeper Chase Zamborelli picked up the win, after making six saves and adding two steals.
Whittier Poets
- The Poets are 4-6 entering the tournament this weekend.
- They were recently ranked No. 4 on the 2021 Men's Varsity Division III Top-10 poll.
- Whittier earned a pair of wins over Redlands (11-9) on Wednesday and Chapman (13-12) last Saturday.
- Eric Borunda was named the SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Week after scoring a total of seven goals between the two contests.
Chapman Panthers
- Chapman comes into the Gary Troyer Tournament at 1-6 overall, as they picked up their first victory over Redlands, 12-10, back on September 29.
Pomona Pitzer Sagehens
- Pomona Pitzer, the No. 1 ranked Division III team in this week's CWPA poll, enters the weekend at 8-6 overall.
- The Sagehens defeated Cal Tech, 21-7, back on September 29.
- Jack Ryan led the way with f\ive goals while Kyle Green and Andrew Plaschke each netted three goals apiece.
- William Byrne made five stops and added two steals in goal.
Up Next For Wagner...
- The Seahawks return to the East Coast and the friendly confines of the Spiro Sports Center, where, they will get set to host their first matches of the year.
- Wagner will welcome Mount St. Mary's (11:00 AM) and George Washington (5:00 PM) on Saturday, October 9 for MAWPC play.
