Baseball Earns 5-1 Victory On Saturday Against Fairleigh Dickinson

Jared Gillen spearheads offense while Nick Zuppe stifles Knights' hitters

Teaneck, NJ – The early inclement weather couldn't hinder a strong outing from Wagner starter Nick Zuppe or slow down the hot-hitting from Jared Gillen as the Seahawks took the middle game of its three-game set against Fairleigh Dickinson, defeating the Knights, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon from the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

With the win, Wagner snaps a five-game losing streak in moving to 9-20 overall and 6-17 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play. Fairleigh Dickinson drops to 7-23 on the year and 6-17 in league action.

Zuppe (4-2) did not allow a run over his six innings of work. The Freehold, NJ native struck out a career-high nine batters as he recorded at least one strikeout in five of the six innings he pitched.

Nicholas Hanson earned his first collegiate save after finishing the final three frames after striking out three Knights to preserve the win for the Seahawks.

Gillen had both hits for Wagner this afternoon while scoring twice and driving in three of the five runs. Ethan Valdez, Jake Lutz, and Ben Montenegro all scored a run in today's victory.

Brad Levinson paced the FDU offense with two hits and drove in the lone run for the visitors. Mike Veit, Hunter D'Amato, Blaise Rantanen, and TJ Werner all added a hit.

Michael DiMartino (0-4) took the loss after lasting 4.2 innings, in which he gave up four runs (one earned) on one hit. DiMartino walked six and struck out five Seahawks.

Gillen put the home team ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first as he connected on his second home run of the season. The Stillwell, KS native added his second RBI in as many at-bats, sending a deep fly to center in the bottom of the third that plated home Valdez as Wagner went ahead, 2-0.

Zuppe worked retired seven straight after a pair of strikeouts in the fifth. The Green & White tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, as Freddy Sabido reached on a throwing error by Tristan Plescia, which allowed Lutz and Gillen to score as Wagner went up by four, 4-0.

Following a 1-2-3 top half of the sixth, the Seahawks pushed across the fifth run of the game. Montenegro led off with a walk and advanced to second on a throwing error by Austin Crebs.

Tyler Sanfilippo placed a well-executed sacrifice bunt up to move Montenegro to third. Lutz drew a two-out walk as Philip Romeo replaced Crebs.

Gillen was the first batter to greet Romeo, as the fifth-year outfielder singled to left field, scoring Montenegro.

Hanson replaced Zuppe to start the seventh. FDU scored its only run of the game in the inning as Levinson singled through the right side that scored Justin Sierra, as the Knights trailed by four.

The first-year Seahawk reliever regained his composure as he struck out Tommy Verga for the first out. Rantanen reached on an infield single to give the Knights a pair of runners on base. Both runners were stranded as Hanson got pinch-hitter, Michael Gruber, to fly out to Gillen, and Wagner catcher, David Melfi, fired a strike to second as Rantanen was called out trying to steal.

Werner kicked off the Knights' eighth inning with a double to left-center. Hanson retired the next three hitters to get out of trouble.

In the ninth, Levinson sent a one-out single to right to start a potential rally for FDU. Hanson struck out Verga for his third punch out of the game. A walk to Rantanen put runners on first and second before a balk moved up each runner a base.

On the first pitch Gruber saw, he flew out to Griffin Schneider in right as Wagner held on for the four-run victory.

These two teams close out the weekend series tomorrow. First-pitch, originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m., has been moved up to a noon start.
