Late Comeback Allows Fairleigh Dickinson To Edge Wagner, 3-2, On Friday Afternoon

Teaneck, NJ – Wagner starting pitcher Ryan Lauk turned in a masterful performance, allowing one run on three hits while striking out a career-high 12 batters, but Fairleigh Dickinson scored the tying and eventual go-ahead run in the top of the ninth to grab a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Seahawks Friday afternoon at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

With the loss, the Seahawks drop to 8-20 overall and 5-17 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play, while the Knights improve to 7-22 and 6-16 in league play.

Lauk surpassed his previous career-high of ten strikeouts, which he set earlier this season against LIU. Kevin Wiseman (1-3) took the loss after giving up the deciding runs on the RBI double by Tommy Verga in the ninth.

Jared Gillen and David Melfi each had two hits for the Seahawks. Freddy Sabido and Tyler Sanfilippo both had solo home runs in today's contest.

TJ Werner paced the Knights with two hits while Verga went 1 for 4 with the game-winning RBIs. Joey Kosowsky allowed just two runs while walking three and striking seven over his 7.1 innings of work. Jude Baxt earned the win while Brendan Medoro was able to close it out in the bottom of the ninth.

Melfi led off the second with a single back up-the-middle before being picked off at first. Following a strikeout to Griffin Schneider, Sabido worked the count to 2-1 before uncorking a no-doubter, clearing the center-field wall, and giving the Seahawks a 1-0 lead.

After Lauk retired the first nine batters he faced to start the game, the Knights tied the ballgame at 1-1 in the top of the fourth. Hunter D'Amato led off the inning with a single through the left side. Justin Sierra sent a hot-shot to third that was stopped by Ethan Valdez, who fired over to first for the out. Alertly, D'Amato hustled his way into third.

The next batter, James Donlon, sent a grounder to the right side that Jake Lutz was able to field and throw over to Sanfilippo at first for the second out, as D'Amato crossed the plate to tie the game.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth. With two men out, Sanfilippo connected on his fourth home run of the season, sending the ball clear over the center field fence as Wagner regained the lead, 2-1.

Lauk worked around potential trouble in the top half of the sixth, as Werner reached on an infield single to short. After striking out Mike Veit, Werner stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The veteran Seahawk right-hander was able to regain his composure on the mound and get D'Amato chasing and ended the threat by inducing a groundball to third.

The Seahawks looked poised to add to its lead in the bottom of the eight. Lutz drew a one-out walk, which put the close on Kosowsky's day. Baxt came in and fell behind Gillen, 2-0, before the Stillwell, KS native sent a screaming liner that was snagged by the Knights' shortstop for the second out.

Melfi collected his second hit of the afternoon, ripping a double down the left-field line, moving Lutz to third on the play. Both men were stranded as Schneider grounded out to second to end the inning.

Looking to record his fourth save of the season, Wiseman was able to get the first two outs rather quickly as D'Amato lined out to Sabido in left and Sierra grounding out to Valdez at third.

Down to their final out, Donlon sent a first-pitch single to center and moved into scoring position on a successful steal of second. A walk to Brad Levinson put two men on. The first pitch that Verga saw from Wiseman, he sent down the left-field line as Donlon and Levinson scored, as FDU took the lead, 3-2. Wiseman struck out Tony Socci for the final out of the inning.

Medoro entered for the Knights and retired the first batter he saw. Ruggiero worked the count to 2-2 before singling through the left side. Quinn Mimnaugh entered as a pinch-hitter but was set down looking at strike three. Sanfilippo sent one to third as Verga went the short way to second to end the game.

These two teams resume the weekend series on Saturday afternoon from Naimoli Family Baseball Complex. First-pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and will be streamed on NEC Front Row, courtesy of FDU Knights Athletics.
