Wagner Men's Track And Field Wins Program's First NEC Outdoor Championship

Smithfield, RI – The Wagner College men's outdoor track & field team won its first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) Outdoor Track and Field title Sunday after scoring 110 points on day two to finish atop of the ten-team field with a final score of 165.

The Seahawks entered the final day with a 21-point lead. Central Connecticut, who was in sixth place at the end of the competition on day one, finished second with 128 points while Mount St. Mary's, who entered the final day in second, dropped down to third, finishing with 115 points.

With today's title, Wagner completed a unique triple crown. The Seahawks have now won the three most recent conference championships; 2020 Indoor, 2020-21 Cross Country, and the 2021 Outdoor. In addition, three school records fell to close out today's championship meet.

The last time an NEC school completed the triple crown by winning the cross country, indoor, and outdoor team titles was back in 2003 when Saint Francis U won all three titles.

Saint Francis U (90), Bryant (88), LIU (75), Fairleigh Dickinson (65), Sacred Heart (40), Merrimack (35), and St. Francis Brooklyn (17) competed in the two-day championship event, which was held on the campus of Bryant University in Smithfield, RI.

A day after winning the 10K, senior Robert Guidicipietro made it a clean sweep, securing the 5,000m crown with a time of 14:58.54. Freshman Anthony Bentivegna was third with a time of 15:02.00 as the Seahawks grabbed 16 points in the event.

Guidicipietro was named Most Valuable Performer (MVP) and Most Outstanding Track Performer (Distance) at the conclusion of the meet.

Junior Michael Pepe won the discus event while setting a new conference record as the Matawan, NJ native launched the discus 55.73m. The throw broke the previous conference mark set by Sacred Heart's Evan Lasher in 2007 when he posted a finals throw of 53.53m.

Josiah Cadet took home the 400m hurdles crown after breaking the tape in 52.34. In the process, he broke Mathew Villane's school record of 54:01. He also placed fourth among the eight qualifiers in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.03.

Ryan Lane secured eight points for the Green & White after his silver-medal winning performance in the pole vault, as the Rochester, NH native cleared 4.40m.

In the 1500m, William Cuthbertson and Trausti Thorsteins combined to score 11 points for the Seahawks, with Cuthbertson crossing the finish in line second with a time of 3:53.42 while Thorsteins clocked in sixth with a time of 3:57.53.

The 4x400m relay team of Joshua Cadet, Babcanec, Cuthbertson, and Corel was edged out by the Bryant quartet, as the Seahawk foursome finished the race in 3:13.26 while the Bulldogs posted a time of 3:13.01.

In taking second, Cadet, Babcanec, Cuthbertson, and Corel etch their names in the school record books, as they broke a 42-year old school record.

Dominic Palermo finished third in the 3000m steeplechase, posting an IC4A qualifying time of 9:17.86.

The 4x100m relay squad, composed of Ryan Lane, Josiah and Joshua Cadet, and Cyril Babcanec placed third with an IC4A qualifying time of 41.91.

In the 400m, Thomas Corel and Babcanec placed third and fourth, respectively, with Corel earning a bronze medal with a time of 48.28 while Babcanec checked in at 49.04 as the Seahawk duo collected 11 more points to add to Wagner's overall lead.

Three Seahawks competed in the 800m with newcomer Luke Cunningham taking third overall with a time of 1:55.10. Cuthbertson and freshman Michael Hubert recorded times of 1:56.90 and 1:57.28, respectively, as Wagner notched 12 points in the event.

Joshua Cadet took fourth in the 200m, posting a time of 21.77.

For those Seahawks that qualified, they will compete at the IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championship on May 15 and May 16 in Springfield, MA.
