Baseball Falls In Sunday's Series Finale At Mount St. Mary's

Emmitsburg, MD -  The Wagner College baseball team closed out its three-game series with Mount St. Mary's on Sunday at E.T. Straw Family Stadium, falling 7-1 to the Mountaineers in the finale on Sunday.

Wagner drops to 8-16 overall and 5-13 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while Mount St. Mary's moves to 8-23 and 4-14 in league contests.

Johnny Kampes drove in the lone RBI for the Seahawks, going 2 for 4 with both hits going for extra bases (triple in the second and the RBI double in the fourth). Jared Gillen extended his hit streak to six after going 1 for 4. Mike Ruggiero has now recorded a hit in four straight games, going 1 for 4 in today's contest.

Mike Pirrotta (1-1) took the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits in his inning of work. Nicholas Hanson worked three innings of scoreless relief, giving up a hit in his 1.1 innings of work.

Kevin Wiseman struck out five batters in his 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Justin Beyer was the third Seahawk reliever, tossing two scoreless frames while adding a strikeout.

Ryan Fisher and Tyler Long each had two hits for the Mountaineers with Fisher scoring three times and adding two RBIs. Starter Michael Yetter went 3.2 innings, striking out five while giving up the one run. Patrick Burke earned the win after not allowing a run in his 3.1 innings of work while fanning five batters.

The Mountaineers pushed across the game's first run in the bottom of the first. Brady Drawbaugh walked to open the game for the home team but was quickly retired as Kampes fired a strike down to second to nab him trying to steal. Fisher followed with a walk and moved to third after a wild pitch and a drop by Ruggiero at short. Myles Nicholson sent a grounder to short that allowed Fisher to trot home.

Kampes sent a one-out triple to right-center in the second, but was eventually stranded. The Mountaineers tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the inning, building a 5-0 lead. Three straight base hits loaded the bases for the Mount before Long sent the fourth hit to right for the second run of the game.

Hanson came on for Pirrotta but his pitch to CJ Kozorosky trickled away from Kampes, which scored Efrain Correa, making it 3-0. Kozorosky worked a walk. Drawbaugh singled to right that plated the third run of the frame before Fisher drew a bases-loaded walk that made it 5-0.

The Seahawks cracked through in the fourth. Gillen sent a double to left-center. With two men out, Kampes turned on Yetter's pitch, sending a double deep to left field that scored Gillen. Tyler Sanfilippo followed with a walk that ended Yetter's day.

Mount added one more in the bottom of the inning as Tommy Savastio doubled down the left-field line as Fisher raced home from second which made it 6-1. Fisher's day wasn't over, as he led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to right field as the Mount increased the lead to 7-1, and held on to win by that margin.

Wagner is set to host Central Connecticut at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ beginning on Friday, April 30, running through Sunday, May 2.
