Brookville, NY – The Wagner women's lacrosse team outlasted Long Island University (LIU) and a 70-minute weather delay on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping the season series with a 13-9 victory from Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
With the win, the Seahawks moved within a half-game of the Sharks for second place in the Northeast Conference (NEC) standings.
Senior
Erin Kerstetter scored six goals for the second time this season, adding four ground balls and six draw controls; junior
Kasey Dorney notched a hat trick of her own, adding seven ground balls and a game-high 10 draw controls. Senior
Madeline Seims and junior
Ally Turner each scored a goal and assisted on another, while junior
Maria Henwood and
Megan Greco each found the back of the net once. Junior
Lauren DiStefano finished with 10 saves.
Whitney Moran had a hat trick to lead the LIU attack, while Paige Sherlock added two goals with a trio of ground balls. Hailey Duchnowski finished with eight saves in goal.
How it Happened:
Dorney got the scoring started less than a minute in, and Seims tacked on a second just over two minutes later off an assist from classmate
Stefani Peluso. Kerstetter controlled the ensuing nine minutes, twice answering LIU goals with goals of her own, completing her hat trick less than 19 minutes in, putting the Seahawks up 5-2.
LIU closed the gap to one at 5-4, but Greco kept the Sharks at bay with a goal in the final 90 seconds before the half. As she did to open the game, Dorney opened the second half with a goal just seconds off the opening draw; Kerstetter added her fourth of the day 90 seconds later, pushing Wagner's lead out to four, 8-4.
After Turner and Dorney answered an LIU goal with two goals less than 90 seconds apart, Moran led a 3-0 run for the Sharks with two goals in 35 seconds, trimming the margin to 10-8. The teams traded goals once again before lightning in the area paused the game with 11:43 left on the clock.
Just 20 seconds off the restart following a 70-minute delay, Kerstetter added her fifth of the game, then added her sixth with 7:00 even left on the clock. That was all either team would muster, as both defenses stood strong down the stretch, allowing just one combined shot on goal the rest of the way.
