Seahawks Outlast Fairleigh Dickinson In Midweek Action, 11-10

Teaneck, NJ – Leading 11-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Wagner baseball team withstood a late push by the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights, as Mike Pirrotta was able to get Mike Veit to ground out with the bases loaded as the visiting Seahawks held on for the 11-10 road victory on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, the Seahawks move to 7-14 on the season while the Knights drop to 5-16 overall.

Cody Bey continued his hot hitting, collecting four hits in five at-bats while driving in two RBI and scoring twice. Jared Gillen added three hits in six trips while plating three runs. Ethan Valdez reached bases in all four attempts while producing a trio of hits and adding an RBI.

Caleb Ward clubbed his third home run of the season, and second in as many games, finishing the afternoon 1 for 3 with three walks, scoring two runs.

Nicholas Hanson earned his first collegiate win throwing three innings in relief; the Ladera Ranch, CA native struck out a career-high five batters. Veteran right-hander Mike Pirrotta worked around potential danger in the bottom of the ninth to record his second career save.

Justin Sierra notched a team-high three hits for the Knights while Hunter D'Amato, Veit, and Tommy Verga added two RBIs apiece. Fairleigh Dickinson went through six pitchers in relief of Phillip Romeo, who allowed four runs (two earned) in his 1.1 innings of work. Ethan Rembish took the loss after giving up three runs.

FDU got on the board first in as Verga connected on a two-run home run to left field. Wagner responded in a big way, batting around for six runs in the top of the second in taking a 6-2 lead.

Brandon Hall put the visitors on the board with an RBI single back up the middle that plated home Sanfilippo, who drew a leadoff walk to start the frame. Johnny Kampes reached on a one-out walk that gave the Seahawks two men on.

The next batter, Valdez, reached on a bunt single back to Romeo and moved to second after Romeo airmailed the throw, which allowed Hall to score to tie the game at 2-2. Jacob Newman came on for Romeo and issued a free pass to Ward, which loaded the bases.

On the first pitch of the at-bat to Bey, the Long Beach, CA native sent a two-run single to right that gave the Seahawks a 4-2 lead. Gillen followed suit, finding room on the right for a two-run single that pushed the lead to 6-2.

Fairleigh Dickinson was able to get one back in the bottom half of the inning, as Veit scored Michael Gruber, who led off with a double that made it 6-3 in favor of Wagner. The Seahawks tacked on a run in the top of the third, as Valdez came through with an RBI single that scored AJ Medrano, which made it 7-3.

The Knights responded with three in their half of the fourth to cut the deficit to one, 7-6. Veit sent a sacrifice fly to left that brought in Blaise Rantanen. Hunter D'Amato sent one back up the middle that scored both Gruber and Jake Ellowitz. Nick LePre came on for Pat Gallagher and was able to pick off D'Amato trying to steal second before Verga flew out to center to end the potential big inning.

Wagner was able to get a pair of runners on in the fifth but Gillen hit into the inning-ending 6-4-3 double play as the Seahawks remained ahead by a run. The Knights, however, were able to retake the lead, 8-7, as Rantanen drove in the tying run with a single and moved into scoring position on an error by Gillen. The next batter, Gruber, doubled to deep left-center field, bringing in Rantanen and giving the home team its first lead since the first inning.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh. A pair of walks issued to Mike Ruggiero and David Melfi gave the Seahawks a pair of runners with no one out. Valdez reached on a fielder's choice bunt back to pitcher as Ruggiero was thrown out at third.

Ward stepped in against Rembish, getting the count in his favor at 2-1. On the next pitch, Ward unloaded a deep drive that cleared the center-field wall, as Wagner went ahead, 10-8. The visitors added one more in the ninth, as Gillen drove in his third RBI of the day with a single through the right side, scoring Bey, which proved to be critical in the bottom half of the frame,

Hanson gave up a bunt single to James Donlon and a walk to Verga, which concluded his outing. Pirrotta came on and served up a double to Sierra, which made it 11-9. The next batter, Brad Levinson, reached on an infield single that trimmed the lead back down to one, 11-10.

Pirrotta settled in on the mound, getting both Rantanen and Gruber to strike out swinging as the Knights were down to their last out. TJ Werner, who pinch-hit for Ellowitz, drew a walk that loaded the bases for Veit.  On the next pitch that Veit saw from Pirrotta, he rolled over the top of it and grounded out to second as the Seahawks hung on for the victory.

Wagner concludes its lengthy seven-game road swing this upcoming weekend with a trip to Emmitsburg, MD as the Seahawks and Mount St. Mary's gear up for a three-game set, beginning on Friday, April 23.
