Emmitsburg, MD – Tied at the half with conference-leading Mount St. Mary's, the Wagner women's lacrosse team dropped a Northeast Conference (NEC) match-up 15-9 Saturday afternoon behind a big second half from the Mountaineers.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 5-3 in-conference, 1.5 games back of Long Island University (LIU) for second place. Mount improves to 10-0 in-conference, 2.5 games clear of LIU for the top spot.
Senior
Erin Kerstetter, fresh off her 100th career goal last Saturday, netted three more to lead the Seahawks. Junior
Ally Turner scored a career-high two goals, adding an assist. Fellow junior
Kasey Dorney scored twice, dished out an assist, scooped four ground balls, caused two turnovers, and added a career-high 12 draw controls. Junior
Maria Henwood and sophomore
Megan Greco each added a goal to round out the Wagner scoring.
Lauren DiStefano stopped eight shots between the pipes.
Kate Kinsella had a game-high six goals for Mount, Alayna Pagnotta finished with a hat trick, and Jordan Butler handed out a game-best four assists. Like DiStefano, Jenna Oler made eight saves in net for the Mountaineers.
How it Happened:
Down 1-0 less than a minute into the game, the Seahawks responded with three straight goals, capped by a highlight-reel, ankle-breaking goal from Kerstetter
The Mountaineers answered with a 5-0 spurt that spanned more than 17 minutes before Kerstetter completed her hat trick with 5:09 left in the opening half. Dorney and Turner followed with a goal each that tied things up at six, where the score remained into the break.
Henwood put the Seahawks back on top with a Turner-assisted goal 2:30 into the second half, but the Mountaineers again bounced back with five unanswered goals, opening an 11-7 lead with 17:15 left in regulation.
Turner and Greco both scored to keep the Seahawks within three, but the Mountaineers held Wagner scoreless over the final 11:13 while tacking on three more, all by Kinsella.
