Field Hockey Opens Conference Play Against Sacred Heart On Monday

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College field hockey team embarks on their second Northeast Conference (NEC) campaign as they open conference play against the Sacred Heart University Pioneers on Monday afternoon at the Wagner College Field Hockey Complex.

LAST TIME OUT FOR WAGNER...
The Seahawks fell to Hofstra, 1-0, back on March 5 at home. It marked the first-ever overtime game in the history of the program.

Freshman goalie Erin Franklin stood out for the Green & White as she opened her collegiate career by recording nine saves against the Pride. The Swadlincote, England native stopped two shots in the first half before an impressive five-save performance in the second half.

Her seven stops in regulation extended the contest for the Green & White. In the extra session, she added another two stops before finally allowing the game-winner past her.

For her efforts, she was named the NEC Rookie of the Week.

ABOUT SACRED HEART...
The Pioneers come into Monday's contest with Wagner looking for their first win of the season, as they stand at 0-2 on the year. Sacred Heart dropped a pair of 1-0 contests to both Hofstra and league foe, Fairfield. SHU battled back-and-forth with the Stags before falling in double overtime.

Senior goalie Hailey Power has tallied 11 saves on the year, highlighted by a season-best seven against the Stags. The Bear, DE native was tabbed NEC Goalkeeper of the Year last season, stopping 174 shots, which was powered by a career-high 25 against Yale.

Last season, the Pioneers earned its second straight NEC tournament berth after posting a 4-0 triumph over the Seahawks, which gave SHU the No. 4 seed in the tournament.

This season, Sacred Heart was tabbed by the NEC head coaches to finish third in the preseason poll after head coach Sydney Van Der Merwe added eight first-year players to his roster.

UP NEXT...

The Seahawks will hit the road for the first time this season as they will head to North Andover, MA for a conference tilt with the Merrimack College Warriors. Game time is set for 1:00 PM and will be streamed live on NECFrontRow.
