Baseball Drops 7-3 Decision At Fairleigh Dickinson On Saturday Afternoon

Teaneck, NJ – The Wagner baseball team led 3-2 through four innings, but a five-run fifth by Fairleigh Dickinson proved to be the difference as the Seahawks fell to the Knights, 7-3, on Saturday afternoon from the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

Both teams move to 1-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play with Wagner dropping to 3-4 overall and FDU moving to 2-5.

Jake Lutz and David Melfi each went 2 for 4 with a run scored in today's contest. Lutz, along with Jared Gillen, drove in the runs for the visitors, as Gillen finished with two RBI on the afternoon.  Tyler Sanfilippo, Griffin Schneider, and Mike Ruggiero also produced a hit.

Pat Gallagher made his third start of the season, allowing four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out four. Jagger Duquette, who came on for Gallagher, was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in his one inning of work. Nicholas Hanson finished the game for the visitors, firing off three scoreless frames with four strikeouts, allowing just one hit and walking one.

Joey Kosowsky went five innings in picking up the win as he gave up three runs on six hits. He walked four but recorded a game-high ten strikeouts. Brendan Medoro earned the save after working four scoreless innings, only giving up two hits and striking out two.  TJ Werner collected three hits in four at-bats while scoring twice for FDU. Tom Ruscitti and Mike Veit each drove in two RBI in the victory for the Knights.

Inside The Boxscore:
  • Wagner's nine-game winning streak over the Knights was halted with today's 7-3 decision.
  • The last time the Seahawks were defeated by Fairleigh Dickinson was on May 6, 2017, in game two of the doubleheader at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex, as the Knights picked up a 10-8 victory.
  • Sanfilippo has now reached base safely in five straight games, tying him with Cody Bey for the longest active streak on the team.

The Seahawks were able to escape early trouble. Tommy Verga led off the bottom of the second with a walk. Gallagher was able to get Brad Levinson to ground into the 6-4-3 double play before striking out Jake Ellowitz to get out of the inning.

FDU struck for the game's first runs in the bottom of the third. Werner started the inning with a single down the left-field line. Gallagher went ahead 0-2 on Ruscitti before he took the third pitch of the at-bat over the right-field wall, as the Knights went up 2-0.

The Seahawks answered back in the fourth. Ruggiero led off the frame with a walk and moved into scoring position after successfully stealing second. Lutz ripped a single to left field, as Wagner got on the board.

Melfi followed up with a double to right-center that gave Wagner runners on second and third with no one out. Kosowsky settled down and struck out the next two batters. Gillen stepped into the box and roped a two-run single to center that gave the Seahawks a 3-2 lead.

The Knights batted around in the bottom of the fifth, posting five runs on five hits in retaking the lead, 7-3. Ellowitz led off with a single up the middle and Werner moved him to third on a double to the deepest part of left center field, which put an end to Gallagher's day.

Jagger Duquette came on and intentionally walked Ruscitti, which loaded the bases. Justin Sierra sent the first pitch he saw from Duquette to right field as Ellowitz tagged up and crossed the plate, knotting the game at 3-3. James Donlon sent a towering fly to right field that was misplayed by Schneider, as Werner scored the go-ahead run for FDU.

The Knights built on the momentum as Hunter D'Amato grounded out to first, which allowed Ruscitti to score the third run of the inning. The final runs of the contest came off the bat of Veit, who sent a two-run home run over the right-field wall as the Knights went ahead by four, 7-3.

The Seahawks had a chance in the ninth. AJ Medrano was hit by a pitch to start the frame, then stole second, but Medoro got pinch-hitter DiMaggio Cazares to fly out to center before inducing two ground outs to end the ballgame.

The series finale between the two schools is set for Sunday, March 21 with first-pitch slated for 1:00 p.m.
