Uniondale, NY - The Wagner men's lacrosse team fell 18-6 to #20 Hofstra University in a non-conference contest at James M. Shuart Stadium.
Graduate senior Philip Buque notched his second hat trick of the season to lead the Seahawks.
Graduate student Matt Cechini, Junior John Killcommons, and sophomore Benjamin Stewart each found the back of the net once.
Senior Matt Morris and freshman Daren Mayer were active throughout the day as each recorded three ground balls. Freshman Bobby Blewett led the squad with nine face-off victories while sophomore goalie Danny Brady stopped 13 shot attempts.
Ryan Tierney sparked the Pride attack with six goals on his way to becoming the Hofstra all-time goal leader this afternoon. Hofstra recorded 31 shots on target and caused 11 turnovers.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-2 on the year while the Pride improve to 3-1.
How It Happened:
Buque delivered on a pass from sophomore Mikey Vanaman on a man-up chance to kick start the days scoring efforts just three minutes into the game. The Pride would respond with six straight goals, powered by three from Tierney.
The Seahawks started the second with a bang, as Cechini sniped home a shot with 14:04 left in the quarter. It was Tierney who had the answer for Hofstra as he connected on an even-strength goal midway through the period. With 5:59 left before halftime, the Pride held a 7-2 advantage. Hofstra and Wagner would exchange goals as Stewart scored an unassisted goal to register his first as a Seahawk.
The Wagner defense stifled the Hofstra offense during the second period as the teams played an even 2-2 quarter.
Buque would add two scores in the second half to complete the trifecta while Killcommons notched a goal for the second consecutive game on an assist from Tyler Lawton.
Hofstra tailed 10 goals in the second half to claim an 18-6 victory over the Seahawks.
