Staten Island, NY – For the second time in a three-game span, four Seahawks netted double-figures as the Wagner women's basketball team completed the season series sweep of Central Connecticut, defeating the Blue Devils, 65-57, on Monday afternoon from the Spiro Sports Center.

With the win, Wagner improves to 10-5 overall and 10-4 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Blue Devils fall to 4-12 on the year.

For the Seahawks, the ten conference triumphs mark the first time the program has reached double-digit victories in the league since 2002-03. Head coach Tara Gallagher led the 02-03 squad to a 15-13 (10-8 NEC) record.

Emilija Krista Grava notched her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career, finishing today's contest with a team-high 13 points and a game-best 11 caroms. Kem Nwabudu dropped in 12 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the floor.

Kate Tokuhara matched her career-highs in both points (12), rebounds (8), and blocks (3) on the afternoon. In 30 minutes off-the-bench, the Lawndale, CA native shot 5 of 9 from the field while also adding two steals.

Freshman Marisa Sanchez-Henry also provided a spark for the Seahawks, as she netted 11 points on 5 of 10 shooting, corralled five rebounds, and dished out six helpers in 28 minutes of action.

Forever Toppin's game-high 26 points on 9 of 20 shooting from the field paced Central Connecticut. Toppin also went 6 of 13 from the free-throw line and grabbed a team-leading four steals in 33 minutes of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED…
 First Quarter
  • Toppin scored nine of Central Connecticut's first 11 points as the Blue Devils led 11-4 with five minutes to go in the opening quarter.
  • Wagner responded in the form of a 10-2 run over the next 3:12 in taking its first lead of the game, 14-13 after Krista Grava made both free-throws.
  • Dejah Jenkins buried a three-pointer that put CCSU ahead for the moment, 16-14, before Sanchez-Henry was able to knot the score with a left-handed layup with 27 seconds left.

Second Quarter
  • Wagner opened the second quarter by retaking the lead after LaNiya Miller was able to bank in the layup but the Seahawks lead was short-lived as Ashley Forker, on the ensuing CCSU possession, tied the game with a basket.
  • The Seahawks upped the lead to seven, 28-21, with 4:22 left before halftime thanks to a 10-3 run over a four-minute stretch where Nwabudu tallied six points.
  • Throughout the run, Wagner's defense was relentless, holding CCSU to just one made field goal (1-7).
  • It was Central Connecticut's turn to respond, as they answered the 10-3 Wagner run by closing out the stanza scoring 13 of the final 17 points and taking a 34-32 halftime lead.
  • The Blue Devils didn't allow Wagner to hit from the outside. They held the Seahawks to 0-3 from beyond-the-arc in the quarter.

 Third Quarter

  • Tokuhara put a stop to the Blue Devils run with another jumper. Thybulle outsprinted a CCSU defender for a quick score to tie the game at 44.
  • Delano hit the backend of a two-shot foul that gave CCSU a one-point edge, 45-44, but it was Miller time, as LaNiya was able to drain the three-pointer off-the-feed from Sanchez-Henry, her fifth assist to this point, as Wagner ended the third with a 47-45 lead.
