Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's basketball team came back from eleven points down to beat the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 73-62, on Thursday afternoon from the Spiro Sports Center.
With the victory, Wagner (11-5; 11-4 NEC) secured a spot in the upcoming Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament. The postseason tournament will begin on Wednesday, March 10. Mount St. Mary's, who clinched the regular-season title last weekend, see their nine-game win streak snapped, as the Mountaineers fall to 15-5 on the year and 14-3 in league play.
At the completion of Thursday evening's contest, the four teams for the #NECWBB Tournament were announced: Mount St. Mary's (NEC regular season champions; will be the No. 1 seed), Wagner, Saint Francis U and Fairleigh Dickinson.
Three Seahawks finished in double-figures as both
Kem Nwabudu and
Emilija Krista Grava each poured in 18 points on a combined 16 of 33 shooting from the floor. Senior
Khaleah Edwards added 17 points, 15 of which coming in the second half of play.
Mount St. Mary's was led by Kayla Agentowicz, who tallied a team-high 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field. Aryna Taylor and Kendall Bresee each netted 11 points.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE…
- The Seahawks have now qualified for the postseason in three consecutive years under fifth-year head coach Heather Jacobs.
- The 11 overall victories are the most by a Seahawk program since 2010-11.
- The Seahawks move to 11-4 in conference play, marking the first time the team has won 11 league games since 2001-02, under Tara Gallagher.
- Junior guard Zhaneia Thybulle distributed a career-high 12 assists in the victory. It marks the first time that a Wagner player has dished out ten or more helpers in a contest since teammate Alayshia Dailey did so against the very same Mount St. Mary's team back on January 19, 2019, at the Spiro Sports Center.
- Mount St. Mary's held a 34-29 edge on the boards, including a 10-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
- The Mountaineers, who came into today's contest averaging 14.9 turnovers, were forced into 18 mishaps in which Wagner converted into 20 points.
- Both teams tallied 28 points from inside-the-paint.
- The game featured two lead changes and four ties.
How It Happened…
First Quarter...
- Both teams went back-and-forth in the early portion of the first quarter, with the visitors taking a three-point lead, 9-6, after Taylor converted on the layup from Rebecca Lee.
- The Mountaineers staged a 10-4 run over a near four-minute span that propelled the lead to 19-12 as Agentowicz hit from three-point range.
- The Mountaineers converted on 4 of 6 from the field during the run while forcing three Seahawk turnovers.
- Krista Grava converted on a turnaround jumper that halted the Mount run. Bridget Birkhead quickly responded by knocking down a three that pushed the Mountaineer lead to eight, 22-14, at the end of the first quarter.
Second Quarter...
- Birkhead continued her hot shooting, scoring on a mid-range jumper that gave the Mountaineers a 24-14 lead in the opening moments of the second quarter.
- The visitors claimed its largest lead of the contest, 29-18, as Angetowicz dialed one up from beyond-the-arc with 6:34 to go before halftime.
- Wagner began to mount their comeback, as Nwabudu was able to muscle in for two.
- A Krista Grava steal led to a LaNiya Miller corner trifecta, bringing the Seahawks to within six, 29-23, with 5:28.
- From that point, Wagner went on a 13-5 run to close the quarter and trailed by one, 34-33.
Third Quarter...
- Mount got the scoring going to open the third, as Agentowicz hit on her third from-the-outside that gave the Mountaineers a 37-33 lead.
- Krista Grava and Nwabudu were key cogs over the next 1:33, as Wagner tied the game at 39, following a jumper by EKG.
- The Seahawks took its first since the opening tip, when Edwards soared to the hoop for two with 6:50 left in the stanza, forcing the visitors to call for time.
- Alayshia Dailey seized momentum for the Seahawks, drilling a corner three-pointer that gave the home team a 46-41 lead.
- The Green & White closed out the quarter scoring 11 of the final 18 points over the final 3:26.
- The Seahawks produced two exhilarating plays, the first, graduate guard Kate Tokuhara was able to shake off a Mountaineer defender and swish home the jumper that made it 51-46.
- The second highlight came from Edwards, as she beat the third-quarter buzzer with a triple that increased Wagner's lead to 57-48.
Fourth Quarter...
- Wagner opened the quarter with back-to-back baskets by Nwabudu and Edwards, which pushed the lead to 61-48.
- Bresee trimmed the lead back down to single digits, 61-53, with a layup.
- It would be the closest that Mount found themselves, as Wagner tallied 12 of the final 21 points on an efficient 5 of 10 shooting to preserve the 11 point victory and clinch its third straight tournament berth.
