Staten Island, NY – Wagner College head football coach
Tom Masella has announced that
Darrell Wilson has been named the Seahawks' Defensive Coordinator, while
Tony Brinson will re-join the Wagner staff as Assistant Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.
"Coach Wilson and Coach Brinson are two excellent football coaches, and I am excited to take the field with them this spring," Masella said. "Their experience will help us navigate a season unlike any we have ever seen, and I am confident that our defense will be well-prepared every Sunday this March."
Wilson, who boasts 17 years of experience at three different Big 10 institutions, enters his fourth year on the Wagner sidelines in 2021, previously serving as Wagner's defensive backs coach.
Most recently, Wilson helped senior
Ahmad Lyons achieve preseason All-Northeast Conference (NEC) honors ahead of the 2021 season. Defensively, all members of Wagner's 2019 defensive front earned professional contracts in
Cam Gill,
Chris Williams,
Tevaughn Grant, and
Julian McCleod. Gill recently won Super Bowl LV with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Brinson, who has coached at Wagner in various roles for a total of nine season, returns to Grymes Hill after one season as the defensive coordinator at Morehead State University in 2019.
Brinson was a member of the coaching staffs that led Wagner to the 2012 and 2014 (regular season) Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship.
During his previous Seahawk tenure, Brinson helped in the development of Gill and former All-NEC linebacker Julian Stanford, who finished his eighth NFL season in 2020 with the Carolina Panthers.
Wagner is scheduled to open its 2021 spring season on March 7 at Merrimack.
