WASHINGTON, D.C. – Wagner football dropped its second straight road contest to open the 2025 season, falling 31-20 to Georgetown (2-0, 0-0 Patriot League) on Saturday afternoon at Cooper Field. With 9:41 left in the fourth quarter, the game was delayed due to lightning in the area and resumed after a more than two hours delay.
The Seahawks opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when sophomore quarterback Jack Stevens capped a 13-play, 76-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to give Wagner a 7-0 lead. After the Hoyas answered early in the second with a short touchdown pass, freshman Nicholas Romero drilled a 37-yard field goal to push Wagner back in front, 10-6. Georgetown closed the half with a 48-yard field goal, trimming the Seahawk lead to 10-9 at the break.
Georgetown seized momentum in the third quarter with a 55-yard punt return touchdown to take its first lead of the game. Wagner responded with a 75-yard march, capped by graduate student Andre Hines' 1-yard score that tied things at 17-17. On the ensuing drive, however, the Hoyas broke the deadlock with a 67 yard touchdown reception.
With 9:41 left in the game and Wagner facing 3rd-and-8 near midfield, play was halted due to lightning in the area. After a delay of more than two hours, action resumed with Georgetown holding a 24-17 lead.
Romero's second field goal of the day, a 40-yarder with 8:43 left, pulled Wagner within 24-20, but Georgetown answered with a late 75-yard drive, finishing with a 5-yard touchdown run to set the final margin at 31-20.
Wagner finished with 306 yards of total offense, including 169 on the ground. Junior Sekou Kamau led the rushing attack with 58 yards, while junior Matt Morad added 57 yards and Hines chipped in 42 and a touchdown. Senior Derek Burrel recorded five recptions for 59 yards while junior Teree McDonald tallied seven catches for 57 yards. Stevens went 13-of-21 for 102 yards and added a rushing score.
Defensively, junior Armani Itote recorded a sack, while graduate student Akil Lampley and redshirt junior Daren Omoregie each tallied six tackles.
The Seahawks (0-2, 0-0 NEC) return home next Saturday to face Marist to open their six game home schedule. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Hameline Field.
