Men’s Water Polo Concludes 2021 Season With A Fourth Place Finish At MAWPC Tournament

Annapolis, MD – The Wagner men's water polo team fell to the No. 3 seed George Washington University Colonials, 11-9, in the third-place game of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Tournament.

Senior Vuk Bulajic found the back of the net 27 seconds into the contest before the Colonials went on a 4-0 run to conclude the first quarter. George Washington carried that momentum into the second quarter, increasing their lead to 7-3. Freshman Mattia Bognolo and junior Olivér Fodor tallied goals for Wagner in the second.

The Green & White opened the second half with a trio of scores, cutting the deficit to one, 7-6, as Bognolo, Bulajic, and freshman Kyle Chambers each scored a goal. Angelo Zania added one more tally in the latter stages of the frame that against trimmed the George Washington lead, 8-7, heading into the fourth quarter. 

Bulajic completed the hat trick at the 7:28 mark to knot the score at 8-8 but the Colonials quickly responded with the go-ahead goal 27 seconds later. Fodor notched the final goal for Wagner at the 5:34 mark to tie the game at 9-9 but George Washington added two more scores for the victory. Jack Leighton dished out four assists and won three sprints. 

Senior goalkeeper Ethan Zirh stopped 13 saves in the contest, bringing his season total to 320 and finishing his career on Grymes Hill with 517, the most in program history. His 320 saves this season are the new single-season mark for the program.

Fodor completed his season with 124 goals, a single-season record for the program. The Budapest, Hungary native's 211 goals are the most in program history. In their final games for the Green & White, Vuk Bulajic tallied a hat trick on five shots while Jack Leighton dished out four assists and won three sprints.

The Green & White conclude the 2021 season with 17 victories, the second most in program history. Head coach and former Seahawk Ciaran Wolohan finishes the 2021 season with 25 career victories for the men's water polo program.
