Men’s Water Polo Splits On Saturday

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner men's water polo team hosted Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) opponents Mount St. Mary's and George Washington University on Saturday.

The Seahawks defeated Mount St. Mary's 20-11 in the first game and fell to George Washington 12-11 to bring their overall record to 9-12 and 2-4 in MAWPC play.

The Green & White got off to a fast start and put a stamp on the contest early, outscoring the Mountaineers 5-0 in the first four minutes of the contest. Junior Oliver Fodor accounted for three of the five during the run. The Seahawks ended the first stanza with a 7-2 lead over the Mount. The Green & White carried their momentum into the second quarter outscoring Mount St. Mary's 4-3 in the quarter. Fodor tallied five first half goals to anchor the Seahawks offense.

The Seahawks continued to apply pressure in the second half, outscoring the visitors 9-6 in the final 16 minutes. Fodor again powered the Seahawks offense matching his first half goal total in the second half.

Sophomore Zsombor Gyemant completed a hat trick along with four assists, Jack Leighton tallied two goals of his own to help the Seahawks get their ninth victory of the season. Reigning MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week Ethan Zirh stopped nine shots in the contest.
 
Wagner (11) vs. George Washington (12)
The Seahawks started the first quarter on a 4-0 run spearheaded by freshman Mattia Bognolo who found the back of the net twice. The Green & White finished the first quarter with a 5-2 lead over the Colonials. The second stanza was a low scoring affair, both teams found the back of the net twice in the frame.

George Washington got back into the game in the third frame, outscoring Wagner 4-2 in the quarter, Viktor Jovanovic anchored the Colonial offense with two of the four goals. The Colonials carried that momentum into the final quarter, again outscoring the Seahawks 4-2 in the quarter. Senior Vuk Bulajic scored with 2:06 remaining in the contest to put Wagner ahead 11-10 but goals from Andrija Sekulic and Nick Schroeder were the difference as Schroeder scored the winning goal with 52 seconds remaining.

Mattia Bognolo had six steals to go along with two goals while fifth-year Jack Leighton found the back of the net three times to go along with three assists and winning all four sprints. Junior netminder Ethan Zirh made 11 saves in the loss.

The Seahawks will hit the road once again next weekend when they head to Cambridge, MA for the Harvard Invite. The Green & White are slated to play four matches as they will take on the host Crimson and Connecticut College on Saturday, October 16 before concluding the two-day event against MIT and Brown on Sunday.
