Men’s Water Polo Defeats Johns Hopkins On Senior Day

The Wagner men's water polo team celebrated senior day with a victory over Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference opponent Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks put a stamp on the contest in the opening minutes of the contest. Junior Olivér Fodor tallied a hat trick in the opening 2:17 of the contest, his third goal of the afternoon was his 100th of the 2021 campaign. The Green & White held a 6-2 lead after the opening stanza.

The second quarter was a high-scoring affair that saw nine shots find the back of the net, the Seahawks outscored the Blue Jays 5-4 in the second quarter to hold an 11-6 lead heading into the intermission. Senior Jack Leighton got on the scoresheet in the second while Fodor tallied his fourth of the afternoon. Freshman Mattia Bognolo completed a hat trick in the quarter. 
 
Wagner carried that momentum into the second half, outscoring the visitors 7-3 in the third quarter. sophomore Zsombor Gyémánt found the back of the net twice while Olivér Fodor scored three times in the third. The Seahawks outscored the Blue Jays 2-1 in the final frame to claim a 20-10 victory at the Spiro Sports Center.

Olivér Fodor finished with seven total goals while Zsombor Gyemant dished out eight assists.  Mattia Bognolo continued the strong start to his career on Grymes Hill with four goals, one assist and five steals. Junior Shaked Yacoby tallied a hat trick while senior Ethan Zirh stopped 15 shots in the victory and stopped two five-meter penalty shots on his senior day in the victory.
 
The Seahawks will hit the road again next weekend to conclude their regular season with four MAWPC games in two days. On Saturday, November 6, the Green & White will battle Navy in Annapolis, Maryland before heading to Baltimore, Maryland to take on Johns Hopkins. The Seahawks will wrap up their regular season on Sunday, November 7 when they will ship to Washington, DC to battle George Washington before taking on Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
