Staten Island, NY-
Danny Connell secured the first ever individual victory in Wagner men's swimming & diving history on Saturday when he posted a 10:54.84 time in the 1000 yard freestyle against Mount St. Mary's.
Â
The Seahawks lost to the Mountaineers 147.5-108.5 in their first ever home meet on Grymes Hill.
Matt Dingess had another strong showing in the pool, finishing first in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a 1:50.97. Teammate
Dylan Egan was right behind him in that heat with a 1:52.10 time.
Â
"It's amazing," said head coach
Colin Shannahan discussing the first home meet. "To be able to add a men's team in this current environment where you see teams getting cut all over the place really makes me proud to be able to offer more opportunities for Division I male swimmers and divers."
Â
The Green & White dominated the 100 Yard Backstroke, due to
Adrian Aguirre touching the wall at 52.61 and
Jack Leighton at 54.81, good for a first and second place finish in the event. Leighton also led the 100 Yard Freestyle with a 46.93.
Â
"This is the first time we've had all the guys together for a meet," said Shannahan. "I think we kind of surprised ourselves in how good we can be this year. Only better things to come."
Â
Aguirre also took first in the 50 Yard Freestyle posting a 22.70.
Karl Lovett followed up with a third place finish in that event with a 23.12. Aguirre then won the 200 Yard Backstroke at 1:57.75.
Â
"Continuing to build on what we did two weeks ago, what we did today," Shannahan said of looking forward. "Get another week of hard work in and regroup and get ready for the mid-season."
Â
Wagner will travel to Smithfield, RI to face Bryant next Saturday November 6 at 12:00 p.m.
