Cambridge, MA – The Wagner men's water polo team heads to Cambridge, MA this weekend as they will compete in the Harvard Invite. The Seahawks will square off against Connecticut College and the host Crimson on Saturday before wrapping up play Sunday against MIT and Brown.
Last Time Out for Wagner…
- The Green & White split their home contests this past weekend, defeating Mount St. Mary's 20-11 before falling to George Washington, 12-11, in the second game.
- Against the Mountaineers, junior Oliver Fodor powered the Seahawks attack with 10 goals and drew 10 exclusions.
- Sophomore Zsombor Gyemant recorded a hat-trick to go along with four assists.
- Reigning MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week Ethan Zirh stopped nine shots in the victory.
- In the finale against George Washington, Wagner took a 7-4 lead heading into halftime.
- The visitors fought back in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring the Green & White 4-2 in both frames.
- GW's Nick Schroeder scored what turned out to be the game-winner for the Colonials as he put one past Wagner's keeper to give the visitors 52 seconds left in regulation.
- Freshman Mattia Bognolo tallied two goals and six steals to lead the Green & White.
- Jack Leighton scored three times while adding a trio of assists and won all four sprints.
- Junior netminder Ethan Zirh claimed MAWPC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
- In two games this weekend, the Sydney, Australia native stopped 20 shots to go along with a steal in the lone Seahawks victory over the weekend.
- In addition to Zirh's announcement, Oliver Fodor was named to the Offensive Player of the Week Honor Roll while newcomer Mattia Bognolo was named to the Rookie of the Week Honor Roll.
- The Budapest, Hungary native accumulated 12 goals on 13 shots while drawing 17 exclusions and recording a steal over the two-game span.
- In the Seahawks 20-11 victory over Mount St. Mary's, Fodor's 10 goals marked the second-most in program history. Fodor is the single-game record holder for goals as he netted 14 back in 2019.
- Bognolo did a bit of everything for the Green & White this past weekend.
- The Canberry, Australia native scored twice, dished out three assists while drawing one exclusion, and recorded a steal against the Mountaineers.
- Against George Washington, he added two more goals, an assist, and recorded six steals.
Scouting The Opposition…
Connecticut College Camels
- The Camels enter the weekend looking for their first win of the season, as they stand at 0-4.
- Last time out, Connecticut College fell to Iona, 17-9.
- The Camels are led by head coach Matt Anderson, who is in his seventh season.
No. 13 Harvard University Crimson
- The Crimson are 13-2 this season and 4-1 in NWPC matches.
- Harvard will look to extend their winning streak after posting a 16-10 victory over MIT last weekend.
- Eight different players found the back of the net against MIT with Alex Tsotadze recording four goals.
- This season, Harvard has had the upper hand against the Seahawks, winning both meetings. (Sept. 5, 16-12 | Bruno Classic; Sept. 11, 16-10 | Princeton Invite).
- The Crimson have remained in the College Water Polo Association national rankings all season after beginning the season ranked No. 11.
MIT Engineers
- The Engineers are 3-8 this season and a 1-4 in NWPC action.
- MIT will look to snap a three-game losing streak.
- Miller Geschke has anchored the MIT offense with 25 goals and 18 assists while Kyle Sandell is second in goals with 20.
- The Seahawks and Engineers squared off on September 5 at the Bruno Classic with Wagner picking up a 16-9 for their first victory of the season.
Brown University Bears
- Brown enters the Harvard Invite with a 9-8 overall record and an NWPC record of 2-2.
- The Bears fell to No. 9 ranked Princeton, 12-8, in their last meeting.
- Brown sports a formidably offensive attack, as four players have recorded more than 20 goals this season, led by Connor Enright, who has a team-leading 27.
- Filip Aleksic has 21 goals to go along with 21 assists and 15 steals.
- This will be the second meeting of the season between the Seahawks and Bears, the Bears got the better of the Seahawks on September 4, 15-12 at the Bruno Classic.
Next Up For Wagner…
- Wagner will make short trips to the Bronx and Brooklyn, as the Seahawks will face off against fellow MAWPC members, Fordham on October 22 and St. Francis Brooklyn on October 23.
