No. 20 Women's Water Polo Finish Bison Invitational With Two Impressive Victories

Lewisburg, PA – The No. 20-ranked Wagner women's water polo team finished the Bison Invitational with a pair of impressive victories, defeating No. 23 Bucknell 17-8 and Mercyhurst 17-3. With the pair of wins, the Seahawks have improved their overall record to 7-4 and extended their winning streak to five games.

The Green & White offense came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 4-0 lead a little over four minutes into the game. Jacqui Sjogren got the Seahawks started, along with two goals from Valeria Rojas and a single goal from Sofia Diaz Alvarez
 
Bucknell would strike back with two goals of their own to cut the lead in half, but a third goal from Rojas, as well as a first from Pip Nash, would give Wagner a 6-2 lead at the end of the first period. 
 
The Seahawk attack would continue its hot streak in the second stanza, outscoring the Bison 7-3. Reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Malia Josephson led the way with three goals in the period, while Diaz Alvarez added two of her own and Skye Nankervis and Sjogren each notched one apiece to send the teams into the halftime break with Wagner leading 13-5. 
 
Things would slow down offensively in the second half, with both teams scoring a combined seven goals in the final 16 minutes. Josephson continued with her hot hand, scoring another three goals in the half, ending with a game-high six scores. Freshman Krystal Quintanilla would record her first career Seahawk goal with only 18 seconds remaining and cap off the Wagner 17-8 victory.

The Seahawk attack kept their foot on the gas going into the second game of the day, scoring 15 unanswered goals through three quarters of action to cruise to a fourth victory on weekend.
 
Jacqui Sjogren got things going early in the first period, scoring four straight goals to start the game. She was followed by a single goal from both Valeria Rojas and Pip Nash to end the period leading 6-0. In the second period Rojas and Sjogren would each tally another goal, while Sofia Diaz Alvarez notched her first to take the teams into halftime with the Seahawks leading 9-0.
 
The third period saw the Green & White extend their lead to 15 with another six unanswered goals from a mix of swimmers. Kristen Saczynski led the way with two goals, her first of the season, while Sjogren, Malia Josephson, Savannah Henshaw, and Skye Nankervis each added one to enter the final period leading 15-0.
 
After 25 minutes and 18 seconds of scoreless water polo, the Lakers broke through the Seahawk defense and got themselves on the board. They would add two more in the final six minutes, but a third goal from Saczynski, as well as Franciska Miló-Sidló's first score of the season gave Wagner a resounding 17-3 victory.
 
Goalies Katherine Campbell and Mikaela Wells combined for seven saves in the game, while Campbell refused to allow a single goal while in the pool for 16 minutes. 
 
NEXT UP FOR THE SEAHAWKS:
The Seahawks will be back in the pool next weekend in Princeton, NJ as they compete in the Princeton Invitational. They will begin with a double header on Saturday, taking on the hosting No. 17 Princeton Tigers at 4:00 pm, followed by the George Washington Colonials at 7:00 pm. They will conclude the weekend on Sunday at 12:00 pm with their third and final matchup of the season with the No. 15 Harvard Crimson.
