Hempstead, NY – The Wagner College men's lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with the Hofstra University Pride, who received votes in the preseason Inside Lacrosse poll, over the first 33+ minutes before seven straight from the Pride early in the third quarter opened a 10-goal cushion as the Seahawks fell by a score of 21-11.
This morning's contest was the season opener for both squads.
Freshman
Tyler Lawton led the Seahawks' attack and stuffed the stat sheet with four goals, an assist, three ground balls and a caused turnover in his collegiate debut. Fellow classmates
Jake Garb and
Mikey Vanaman each added two goals apiece, while senior
Nic Ancona added a goal and an assist. Senior
Tim Schmidt and sophomore
Stephen Dwyer added a goal to round out the scoring for the Green and White.
Freshman
Brendan Higgins was one of three Seahawks who finished with three ground balls, while sophomore
Tommy Scarpello and senior
Nick Warren scooped two ground balls each. Newcomer
Danny Brady stopped 10 shots over the first three quarters, while classmate Johnny Wright recorded three saves in the final period.
For the Pride, six players recorded multiple goals, led by Justin Sykes who found the back of the net four times, adding two assists for a game-high six points.
Hofstra struck first, but Schmidt tied the game just over a minute later off a Lawton assist. The Pride responded with three straight goals before Garb netted his first of the day to close out the first quarter.
The Hofstra offense opened the second quarter with a trio of goals in upping its lead to 7-2, but the Seahawks answered with Lawton sandwiching a pair of goals around a Dwyer score to pull Wagner within two, 7-5. After nearly four scoreless minutes from each side, the Pride scored two goals in a 10-second span to close out the first half.
Garb scored his second of the day to open the second half before the hosts rattled off seven straight goals over a quarter and a half. Lawton completed his hat trick to end the run, but the Pride found the back of the net four more times in taking a 21-7 advantage.
Four unanswered goals from the visitors, including one more from Lawton and Ancona along with two from Vanaman, highlighted the Seahawks late run as they held the Pride off the scoreboard over the final 2:38.
