Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Picks Up First Win Of The Year; Defeats LIU, 9-8, In Overtime Thriller

Brookville, NY In a game of runs, it was the Wagner men's lacrosse team who reeled off the final run of the day, rallying to tie the game in the final minute before earning the 9-8 overtime win over the LIU Sharks Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Stephen Dwyer was at the forefront of the Seahawks win, scoring both the game-tying and game-winner, finding the back of the net four times in all on the afternoon. Freshmen Jake Garb recorded his second straight multi-goal game of the year while classmate Mikey Vanaman added a goal and an assist in the victory.

Senior Nick Warren scooped up a game-high seven ground balls while winning 16 of the game's 21 face-offs. In net, newcomer Danny Brady stopped 12 of LIU's 20 shots on goal in picking up his first collegiate win.

Richie LaCalandra was one of four Sharks who scored twice. Will Mark matched Brady in goal, recording 12 saves.

How It Happened:
Two minutes into play, with the shot clock winding down, Vanaman put the ahead Seahawks, 1-0, as the score held up the rest of the opening frame, with each goalie making four stops.  On the attack quickly, Wagner scored 48 seconds into the second quarter when Dwyer used his size to create shooting space before firing one past Mark off the feed from Vanaman.  LIU finally got on the board three minutes later.

Senior Dylan Kaminski put home a running laser in the top corner and Garb added a bouncer just before taking a big hit as the Green & White carried a 4-1 lead into the break. Garb notched his second of the day to open the third quarter, spinning free of his defender and burying one from point-blank range, but the Sharks responded with three straight to narrow the gap to one, 5-4.

Freshman Tyler Lawton ripped one just inside the left post and Dwyer added his second, increasing the Green and White's lead to three, 7-4, heading into the final quarter. LIU kept the visitors at bay in the fourth quarter, scoring three unanswered tallies to tie the game before LaCalandra rifled one past Brady to put the home team ahead, 8-7, with 1:24 remaining in regulation.

With time winding down, Dwyer, using his 6-4, 230-pound frame, drove through his defender from behind the net and created space out front before rifling one back across into the far side of the net to tie the game with just 20 ticks left.

In the extra session, Warren won the face-off and Wagner called timeout. Off the timeout, Dwyer dodged a brief double team behind the net, ran toward the left post and as he went to the ground, threw one in just inside the post, sending the Seahawk sideline sprinting onto the field in jubilation.
