Macon, GA – The Wagner men's lacrosse team rallied from several two-goal first half deficits to knot things at the half with Mercer before the host Bears broke out in the second half in a 20-8 defeat for the Seahawks on Saturday from Five Star Stadium.
Stephen Dwyer scored four goals on the day,
Nic Ancona added his first hat trick in nearly two years and
Jake Garb scored for the fifth straight game for Wagner.
Sean Goldsmith scored a game-high seven goals for Mercer; Will McCarthy and Michael Quinn added three goals each for the Bears.
Dwyer struck first exactly five minutes in. The Bears took a 2-1 lead just past the 7:00 mark and held the lead until Dwyer added his second with just three seconds left in the opening quarter.
Mercer opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals to open its first two-goal cushion, but Ancona answered with his first of the day off a feed from classmate
Tim Schmidt. Mercer once again pushed the lead out to two, 5-3, but Dwyer completed his hat trick to pull the Green and White back within one.
Once again, the Bears pushed their lead back to two, 6-4, but Ancona added his second and Dwyer tied the game at six with his fourth of the day with eight seconds left in the half.
Mercer opened the second half with four straight goals and didn't look back from there, scoring 14 of the game's final 16 goals. Ancona completed his hat trick, his first since March 6, 2018 against VMI, in the third quarter and Garb extended his goal-scoring streak to five games in the fourth.
