Hartford's Second Quarter Burst The Difference as Men's Lacrosse Falls at Home

Staten Island, NY – A big second quarter from the Hartford Hawks proved to be the difference as the Wagner men's lacrosse team fell in non-conference action this afternoon from Hameline Field, 18-9.

Jake Garb had a hat trick and a team-high four points for Wagner. Tim Schmidt and Mikey Vanaman both had three points, Nic Ancona and Stephen Dwyer both had two points. On the defensive end, Tommy Scarpello, Nick Azzopardi and Brendan Higgins all caused two turnovers each.

Christian Paley, Carter O'Connell and Braeden McKercher all notched hat tricks for Hartford. Cam Logan stopped 12 of Wagner's 21 shots on goal.

How it happened:

The Seahawks struck first, just shy of two minutes in, when Dwyer put home his 11th goal of the year off a feed from Garb.
Schmidt made it 2-0 on a man-up opportunity less than three minutes later off a feed from Vanaman.
Hartford responded with two goals to tie the game, but the score didn't remain even long before Schmidt buried his second goal of the game with an outstanding individual effort.
Hartford score the final goal of the opening 15, before the game-changing second quarter. The Hawks scored seven unanswered goals in the period, controlling the face-off X and holding Wagner without a shot on goal over the final 11:31.

Down 12-3 at the start of the third, Garb took control of the game, scoring all three of his goals in less than five minutes, halting Hartford's run and bringing Wagner to within six. Hartford responded with the final two goals of the third and first two goals of the fourth, taking a 16-6 lead with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.

Vanaman, Dwyer and Anconca all added a goal apiece down the stretch, as Wagner drew within eight, but no closer, in the final quarter.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Both teams finished 4-for-7 on extra-man opportunities, with each team going 1-for-2 in the first half and 3-for-5 in the second half.
  • Schmidt's two-goal game marked the second such occurrence of his collegiate career, the other time coming last March 16 against Hobart
