Baseball Rallies Past Richmond, 9-6, For Second Straight Victory

Box Score | Box Score (HTML)

Richmond, VA -
Trailing 5-4 after three innings, the Wagner College baseball team scored twice in the fourth, once in the sixth and added two more runs on senior Griffin Schneider's third home run of the season as the Seahawks defeated Richmond, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon from Pitt Field.

The Basics:
  • Records: Wagner (4-5) | Richmond (2-8)
  • Series History - Wagner 2, Richmond 5
Schneider, who connected on his third home run of the season and second in as many days, went a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored on the afternoon. Joining Schneider with a multi-hit day was freshman catcher David Melfi and junior shortstop Mike Ruggiero. Ruggiero, like Schneider, recorded two RBI, as did Ethan Valdez.  Senior right-hander Ryan Lauk went five innings to improve to 2-0 on the season as he struck out five batters on the day. Brandon Demma worked four scoreless frames in picking up his first career save.

Dominic Toso and Alden Mathes each had three hits and two RBI for the Spiders on the afternoon. Collin Lowe lasted six innings in which he struck out six but gave up seven runs (four earned) in taking the loss.

Richmond went ahead early on, scoring four runs on five hits. Toso started the rally with an RBI single down the first base line to plate home the first run. Drew Blakely sent a sacrifice fly to right for the second run. Hipsman brought in Toso on a single through the right side before Mathes delivered an RBI base hit to center to cap the scoring.

Wagner wasted little time in responding to the Spiders outburst, answering back with four runs of their own in tying the ball game. Senior Tyler Sanfilippo led off the inning with a walk. Schneider sent a single to center to give the Seahawks a pair of runners.

Both men moved up on a wild pitch before newcomer DiMaggio Cazares drew a walk to load the bases. Melfi ripped a single through the left side to score Wagner's first run. The next batter, Ruggiero, reached on a fielder's choice that plated home Schneider in cutting the lead in half, 4-2.

Valdez reached on a fielder's choice off the sacrifice bunt, which scored Cazares as Ruggiero moved the third on the throwing error by the Richmond starter. The final run in the frame came on a sac-fly to left by Henry Martinez

Lauk settled in and retired the Spiders in order in the second before Richmond took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third as Toso cranked a solo home run to right center.  Once again, the Green & White answered quickly with two runs in the fourth in taking a 6-5 lead.

Melfi started the inning with an infield single to second and moved to second on a throwing error by the Spiders' second baseman.

During Ruggiero's at-bat, Melfi moved to third on a passed ball. With one out, Valdez recorded his second RBI of the game on a fielding error by Daniel Little at second as Wagner knotted the score at 5-5.

Valdez scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch after moving to third on Martinez' second sacrifice fly of the contest. The Seahawks tallied a run in the sixth in upping the lead to 7-5 as Ruggiero doubled down the third base line to score Melfi, who led off the stanza with a walk.

It was Richmond's turn to rally back, as the Spiders trimmed the lead down to one, 7-6, on a leadoff solo home run off-the-bat of Mathes.

Moving to the top of the seventh, Wagner plated home two more scores in taking a 9-6 lead as Schneider belted his third round-tripper of the season off of Garrett Aylor, who came on for Lowe.

Demma, who came on for Lauk following a walk to Lass in the bottom of the sixth, retired the next six batters before issuing a walk to Dan Leckie. He settled down and got Mathes to fly out to left. It would be Richmond's best chance in mounting a comeback, as Leckie advanced to second on a wild pitch and Ready drew a two-out walk.

The rally ended as Schulefand fouled out to Sanfilippo at first.
Demma worked a 1-2-3 ninth in preserving Wagner's second straight win and recording his first save of  his collegiate career.
