Schneider's Three-Run Home Run In The Ninth Propels Wagner Past William & Mary, 5-4, On Friday

With two outs and trailing 4-2 in the top of the ninth, senior Griffin Schneider belted what turned out to be the game-winning, three-run home run as the Wagner baseball team rallied back to defeat William & Mary, 5-4, at Plumeri Park on Friday afternoon. 

The Basics:

The senior outfielder, who pinch-hit in the seventh, went 1 for 2 in the game with the three RBI coming on the big fly in the ninth.  Newcomer Henry Martinez finished 2 for 5 with a run scored while sophomore catcher Johnny Kampes drove delivered the other RBi for the visitors. 

Senior right-hander Nick Zuppe improved to 2-0 on the season in picking up the win after working four innings in relief of starter, John LaPointe. Zuppe gave up two runs on five hits while walking three while striking out six batters. Junior Kevin Wiseman worked a scoreless bottom of the ninth in picking up his second save of the season. LaPointe gave up two earned runs on four hits while walking four and striking out four in his first start of the season. 

Jack Cone, Matt McDermott and Ben Greenspon each had two hits for the Tribe with all three in addition to Hunter Hart driving in the runs for William & Mary.  

Chris Farrell lasted 4.1 innings for the home team, allowing just one run on two hits but issued eight walks to the Seahawks despite striking out four batters. Rojo Prarie and Matt Howat combined to throw 2.2 frames without allowing a hit but did five up a run. Randy Prosperi, who gave up the home run to Schneider in the ninth, took the loss. 

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Wagner scored the first run of the contest. Two straight walks to Freddy Sabido and Tyler Sanfilippo started the frame before Farrell retired the next two batters via strikeouts. Emil Matti drew the third walk to load the bases and Kampes followed suit with a free pass of his own in plating home Sabido for the first run.

William & Mary responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Greenspon singled to tie the game at one before Cone followed with the go-ahead RBI base hit to center in giving the Tribe a 2-1 lead. 

Wagner started the sixth inning with a walk by Matti, who promptly stole second. On a deep fly by Kampes, Matti moved to third. AJ Medrano walked before Martinez struck out looking for the second out of the frame. With Cody Bey at the plate, Prarie bounced one to the backstop, with allowed Matti to score from third and tie the game.

he Tribe scored a run in the seventh and eighth inning in doubling up Wagner, 4-2, heading into the ninth.  Martinez led off the Seahawks' ninth with a base hit to right. Moving to second on a ground out by Bey, Sabido ripped a double to center as Wagner had the tying-runs on second and third with just one out. 

Sanfilippo looked at strike three from Prosperi as Wagner was down to its final out. The resilient Seahawks didn't falter and Schneider was able to send one over the left field fence in giving the visitors the lead at 5-4. 

Wiseman came in and quickly retired the first batter he faced in Hart with a strikeout. Wiseman issued a walk to Tyler Solomon, who moved into scoring position after stealing second. The Axtell, TX native closed out the contest with back-to-back strikeouts as Wagner earned its third win of the season. 


Inside The Boxscore:
  • Martinez extended his hit streak to six straight games. 
  • Schneider produced his second multi-RBI game of the year, after driving in three in the season opener at Norfolk State. 
  • Kampes made his season debut behind-the-plate for the Seahawks this afternoon.
  • Today's game marked the fifth time this season the final score was decided by two runs or less. 

Next Up:
  • Wagner remains in the state of Virginia this weekend as they will head to Richmond on Saturday and Sunday.
  • The Seahawks will square off against the University of Richmond Spiders at 12:00 pm from Pitt Field.
  • The Green & White concludes the three-game weekend on Sunday at Virginia Commonwealth (VCU).
