Piscataway, NJ - The Wagner College baseball team cut Rutgers' four-run lead to one after three innings before the Scarlet Knights responded with an 11-run outburst over the final four frames in defeating the Seahawks, 15-3,  on Tuesday afternoon from a rain-soaked Bainton Field.

  • Series History - Rutgers leads 26-4-2
  • Season Series - Wagner 0, Rutgers 1

Juniors Emil Matti and Mike Ruggiero each recorded two hits on the rain-soaked afternoon. Ruggiero, along with senior Freddy Sabido and newcomer Ethan Valdez drove in Wagner's runs. Wagner starter Nick DeCarlo allowed four runs on one hit as he walked six men while striking out four in taking the loss.

Richie Schiekofer and Kevin Welsh had two hits apiece for Rutgers with both players combing to drive in seven RBI as Schiekofer drove in four RBI, three of which coming in the bottom of the eighth on a home run to right center.  Rutgers starter Jack Parkinson gave up all three Seahawks runs on three hits without factoring into the decision. The Scarlet Knights used five relievers over the final six innings in which Jared Bellissiomo earned victory.

The Scarlet Knights opened the game with four runs on just one hit in taking the early lead. DeCarlo was able to strike out Danny DiGeorgio before hitting the next two batters and walking Schiekofer to load the bases. A strike out of Chris Brito gave the visitors a chance to escape the big inning, but, Tim Dezzi, drew a walk that brought in Sam Owens for the game's first run. The next batter, Welsh, cleared the bases with a triple to right center, upping the Rutgers lead to 4-0.

Following a scoreless second, the Seahawks rallied back in cutting the Rutgers lead to one, 4-3. Matti led off the Wagner third with an infield single up the third baseline. Ruggiero connected on a double to left center that plated Matti as Ruggiero moved to third on the throw home. Valdez pushed one up the first baseline that was scooped up by Brito as he beat Valdez to the bag but not before Ruggiero crossed the plate for Wagner's second score of the inning.

Sabido pelted a triple down the right field line that scored Cody Bey and brought the visitors to within one, 4-3. Tyler Sanfilippo was the next batter, but Parkinson was able to retire the Wagner first baseman on a pop up to short, ending the scoring threat.

Rutgers added two runs in the fifth and sixth in building a 8-3 lead with DiGeorgio doubling to right in the bottom of the fifth while Schiekofer plated his first RBI of the day on a double to right in the sixth, which was followed by a Brito sacrifice-fly to center.  The Scarlet Knights put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Mike Nyisztor doubled to score DiGeorgio before Owens came in to score on a wild pitch from Justin Beyer and a fielding error by Ruggiero allowed two more Scarlet Knights to cross the plate.

Rutgers tacked on three more runs on Schiekofer's home run to right field in capping the win.
